After asking for your advice on here a weks or so ago, i took your advice and just got a 3gs iPhone yesterday...still playing around with it, waiting for the sim to update so i can activate wifi etc...
does anyone have any suggestions on apps i should add, things i should know, what to avoid, whether the screen protecters are worth having? all the reviews on dx say they make screen blurry and sticky??

Or how to stop my 12 yr old son interferring everytime i pick the thing up, he's straight in there with i know that i know this!!
Thanks for any help!

I've got screen protectors from DX and as long as you are careful applying them then you shouldnt have any problems. My screen is not blurry or sticky....The cases from dx are good too - I recently bought a pink backside case with the apple logo on the back and it looks really good and fits well...(quality can be variable but all mine have been ok so I guess you pays your money and you takes your chances!)

As far as apps go:
Appminer (free)- is an app to help you search for apps that have been reduced or recently made free. Useful and you can keep your eye on apps you like but want to wait to come down in price.

Facebook (Free) - is great if you are into facebook as you can easily login and use on your iphone

pic2shop (free) - is a barcode scanner that you can use while you are out to check the prices of products. Some barcodes dont work but I love it and has saved me a fair bit when I'm out.

vouchercloud (free) - you can search for vouchers on the move and then show the code that the app generates to the shop/restaurant etc and they will give you the discount displayed. Not every place has vouchers but the usual 2 for 1 pizza express deals are on there and means you dont have to worry about printing vouchers. Some people say that they have had the vouchers rejected but I have used it at a number of places and never had any probs.

Soundhound (paid) - is a bit of a novelty but I think its very cool. You can get it to recognise most songs and give you the title/artist etc just by holding your iphone near a speaker or singing/humming a tune. Bit gimmicky but cool nevertheless.

Whatsapp (paid) - can allow you to message other iphone users in your contacts for free - i think most people use it as a replacement for text messaging but it can also act as a live IM too.

o2 (free) - quite handy if you are on o2 to check remaining minutes/next bill costs etc.

Thats it - I have games but wouldnt really recommend them massively. I tend to use my DS for games but I have heard time management games (like Sally's Spa) lend themselves quite well to the iphone.

Hope that helps! (can't help you with your son though - my little brother is the same - as soon as I turn my back he has my iphone!)

Thanks! my son did say there was an app to check prices, but to be honest i thought he'd imagined it!

I appreciate both members suggestions, thank you! Will have a look thru it all now.
For some reason i can't connect bluetooth to my sons phone, not sure if i have to wait for the new sim, with my ld number on to activate?
Also want to add ringtones, but cant see how? is there a guide step by step to iphones anywhere?

you can add them with a special (PC-Based) app. it basically renames m4a files as m4r, but its a easy solution. Or you can buy from the itunes store on your iphone itself.

P.S. My fiancee liked the app so much that I had to get it for her; it costed me £552.59 [£552 for the iphone 3gs 32gb and £0.59 for the app.]

To be fair it could have been played on a second generation iPhone or iPod Touch so you didn't need to pay as much as you did.

I would recommend...

"Live Traffic Info" (Highways Agency)
"London Traffic" (Uwe Meier) [assuming you visit London]
"Met Office Weather application" (Met Office)
"Read It Later (Free)" (Idea Shower, LLC)
"thetrainline" (Trainline.com Limited)

The only game I play, as opposed to those that my kids ask me to download so they can play them, is:

"MiniSquadron" (MrFungFung / Tak Fung)

(Although I can provide a full list of all of the games I have if you wish)

I also have a link to the site http://iphone.tvcatchup.com that I used to use every so often, but you now need to register to continue using it.

I have not paid for any of the applications I have installed.

Also don't forget when looking for "vouchers" & "deals" that you can use either the full [ http://HotUKDeals.com ] site on your iPhone, or the cut-down "mobile" version: [ http://m.hotukdeals.com ]

Defo make sure you have a case and screen cover for it. I use the Incipio feather cases, they are about £10 on ebay, and they come with two high quality screen protectors as well!

I'm proud of my suspension-time percentage.

I imagine you smash your monitor in a fit of rage when you get banned ;)

What a lucky Fiancee!

angry birds was free yesterday i think, typical i missed it!
very surprised that the apps are so cheap, was expecting anything decent to cost a few quid...which adds up when you're not sure what you need or want!
My son persuaded me to get the fingerprint scanner, unfortunately for him he tried it first and was so shocked when the face and scream went off!! poor kid, but serve him right for telling me what to get!

will work my thru the suggestions from everyone. thanks again, really appreciated.

Of course they cant be bricked. Who said that?

If anything goes wrong you just force a restore.

one of my sons friends said that if you jailbreak it apple can brick the device, the screen just comes up with bricks on? Teach me to believe 12 yr old! its just htat they do tend to know more about gadget new stuff than i do.

+1 on the feather case.
They come in a variety of colours and they look really nice and allow you to see and use the beautiful screen without putting a seperate sheet of plastic in between.

With the iphone's back being a scratch attractant, you DEFO need to buy a cover/case for it!
#26
actually have been looking for a case for it, the store threw in a back cover for it, but its more a case i want, terrified i might drop it! will look into the icipio ones, would rather get something that has been recommended.
thanks again to you all.
hopefully when the novelty of playing with it wears out, i might actually get some housework done!!
