ipod question - putting films on?

We go away next week and as the kids are with us, it'll be early nights in bed with no internet, decent tv etc......
I'll be fine as I'm taking my kindle, but I was considering putting a couple of films on hubbys ipod for him.
Whats the best way of doing it? Guessing it will involve copying it to external hdd, then adding file to itunes, but is there a way to compress them? His is only 8gb :\
Apologies for sounding dumb!

they will be compressed anyway in the conversion process-an ipod uses mp4 format so you would get plenty movies on an 8gb unit-you will need to convert them to mp4 before transferring them via itunes.

If you download movies in avi format then download a free app called flex player and follow the instructions, you will have the avi files on your ipod/iphone in minutes and play great, no converting required
