ipods for dummies?

I've finally entered the 20th century just as everyone left, and bought an mp3 player.

It's an ipod touch and now I am stuck!

I've read about jailbreaking although I am not sure how or why I'd do that or which method - I think there are several.

Before I do anything with my new machine I wondered if there is an idiots guide to ipods out there for people "of a certain age."

I'm pretty useless with technology but hopefully won't brick my new toy.

Any advice gratefuly received

firstly you cant brick it by jailbreak. well you can but you can fix it so easily it doesnt really count as a brick. don't update your ipod on itunes !! you'll probably have 3.1.3 at the moment but the easiest thing to do for me at the time anyway was to downgrade to 3.1.2. download it from here then plug in your ipod, whip open itunes and hold shift and click where you see it says restore. you'll then need to browse to wherever it is you saved the 3.1.2 ispw. let that finish then download blackra1n. keep your ipod plugged in, open blackra1n and follow the easy steps. i'd recommend installous for free apps but thats another tutorial. theres plenty of help on youtube and google. hope this helps :)

Jailbreaking is used to get free games and such, if you dont intend to use it for this, or dont mind paying for the games and applications on the app store then there is no need to jailbreak.

You can listen to your music without jailbreaking the ipod, and it is simple to do. as dcx_Badass said.

install itunes
and then either buy the songs from the itunes store, or insert a cd and click import.
When you connect your ipod it will sync the music from your pc to your ipod.
if you already have digital songs on your pc, you can either drag them into itunes or allow itunes to search your whole pc for all of your music, which will then simply sync to your ipod when you plug it in. (again if you let it)

if you would prefer to choose songs to put onto you ipod you can untick "automatically sync" on the ipod menu in itunes and use drag and drop from the library to the tab called music under your ipod.

hope this helps. reply or send me a message if you want any further information i would be happy to help :)

why bother jailbreaking it if you have no idea how it works, someone who is "pretty useless with technology" has no need for a jailbroken ipod

Yeah also, jailbreaking does get quite technical to setup and use. and therfore I would also strongly suggest against it for someone that doesnt know what their doing.

I would say just adding the hackulo.us respitory and installing installous is reasonably simple

Thanks for all the (slightly confusing and contradictory!!!) advice.

I thought, wrongly it seems, that jailbreaking allows you to play non Apple iTune bought songs - ie ones I already own.

How will I know which version I will have on the ipod - I bought it second hand but it is only a couple of months old?

Are free games legit or is that a grey area?

I'd add rep to everyone but no longer sure how so I have added like instead.

Thanks

Not a grey area at all... 'free' as in illegally downloaded games are not legit. Much cheaper than buying them all though. All those 59p's soon add up.

You can add any music to your iPod, which ever music you have on CD, have downloaded or have on your computer, simply plug your iPod into your computer open it up in itunes and then drag the files onto the iPod

To check the version go to Setting>General> About and you should see it there :)

u can look at what version by going .. settings - general - about and then look for "version"

I love the fact that there are techie guys/gals on here who will give a positive and helpful response to somebody less knowledgeable than themselves.

You're all great imo

PS.

I'll be in touch as soon as I get an iphone4 (if I ever find a Tesco store that actually has one!)

If you really want to jailbreak it and it's on 3.1.3 firmware, use "spirit" very simple to do, even fir someone who is non technical

instructions here

Totally agree with Bill. SO many forums are condescending cliques where you have to know it all already or get blasted.

So thanks again all.
