is labeling someone a chav humorous
does it just mean they have a 'different' sense of fashion , manners & views on non-chavs
are you offended with the label chav and do you want to break out of chavdom
do you live in a chavtown ?

Probably is derogatory when you are using to describe someone else, but most chav's are probably proud of being described as one.

SUITS ALL THE GOONS ..DOWN SOUTH...ESP ESSEX!:{
#7
Are you using it as a compliment if not then it must be derogatory.

I hate that word along with **** ! Travellers called their children chavvies so i am guessing it is a word from that.

I got called a chav by a prune boy. I wasn't offended.

I was greatly offended when someone called me a chav. Granted, it was at a Metallica gig and I was wearing a Nike raincoat and some old trainers, but hardly chavvy ffs. He was a skinhead goon in stereotypically grungy black army-style boots, combats and shirtless, but meh.

But I use it all the time to describe chavvy people.

whats a prune boy.

chav...i say it all the time....oh noz is it not allowed. the parents at school use it to describle certain areas or the rough kids mum.....

As it stands for "Council House And Violent" I guess if you do not live in a council house and you are not violent then you should just laugh it off.

That's a backronym - it's not where the word comes from.

I think it's a hugely dismissive term, without nuance and wit and I think people who use such a word are morons.

What else can we call the pervading modern British underclass?
#16
I think it's a bit insulting to use the description 'chav' about a person. I take it to be the modern day equivalent of 'common'.

But I must admit that I do use 'chavissimo' about certain fashions or whatever that I see on the telly!
#17
if its understood in what you are saying in whatever context then its too late to reason it either way

they sound lovely....

I have been called a chav ( when i was younger :p)..but where im from its mainly to do with how you dress... I think....

Wouldnt say its insulting tbh

now they just say 'she's rough around the edges'!

nope im in kent....near chatham where the chav thing came from.....and trust me there is a lot of people who dress like that here and also have attitudes to match.

i mean who chooses to dress like a proper chav? i call my bro a chav when he is scummy!

Of course it's an insult, it's one of those that people use to put others down so they can feel better about themselves, especially when it comes to clothes, it's like bullying in the playgroung when the poor kids havent got the "right" clothes.

The term Charver has been used in schools in Newcastle to describe someone who wore tracksuits and usually went out thieving since before I was at junior school (eighties). It supposedly comes from a Gypsy/Romany word for child.

I am intrigued, where does it come from?

I agree with the second paragraph.

disagree.....just cos u have less money doesnt mean u gotta dress in chav gear. tbh chavs wear labeled clothes! my kids happily parade around in George clothing but dont look nything like above pics.

imo chav is both the clothing and the attitude.

"A Chav is defined as anybody poor who does not show the correct amount of humbleness before the children of the lower middle classes. Chavs commit the ultimate crime: that of having poor/popular tastes. Also, they like sex and beer and drugs." :D
#26
Well it is but the word it used to much to desribe anyone who seems to be lower class i.e on benefits these days which isnt what I call a chav.

I know students who I would call something like a chav despite wearing big brand clothes and affording loads of nights out, so chav is a lifestyle not a fashion sense, its just many people choose to wear the stereotypical chav clothes and live that lifestyle.
