We the undersigned petition the Prime Minister to Force Mobile
Network Providers to UNLOCK Phones FREEE, BY LAW, AT NO COST!

So many phones are sold to consumers LOCKED.

LOCKED means that they cannot be used on any other mobile phone
network, simply because of restrictions, imposed by the
providers themselves.

This is NOT fair practice, towards the owners of phones, and
other competing networks.

Phone Network Providers CAN unlock nearly any phone, usually
over the phone in seconds. They tend to charge over £35 for
this though! By putting this cost on the consumer, it often
makes them simply live with the less competitive network. The
network makes money because the consumer has no choice but to
pay up, or not use their OWN purchased mobile phone.

I encourage the Government to make mobile phone network
providers unlock ANY phone at their own cost so that consumers
can CHOOSE the network they want with as little hassle as
possible!!

NOTE TO 10 DOWNING STREET: THIS IS NOT ABOUT SELLING PHONES
UNLOCKED, IT IS ABOUT THEM DOING SOMETHING ABOUT IT NOW!!! IE.
UNLOCKING ANY WISHFUL CUSTOMERS PHONES FREE OF CHARGE!

Any phones EVER locked by a network need to be unlocked now FREE of CHARGE at the network lockers expense!

That's like someone subscribing to a service, and then the company saying, oh and even after after your contract is up, your going to have to pay £40 to get rid of us!

not strickly true. the inital cost of a handset is in most cases hevily subsidised by a network. You pay line rental each month and some people think this covers the cost of the phones. In a way it does but it also pays for the upkeep of the network wich without your phone would be a pretty attractive door stop.

I think it's fair. You know it's the case prior to getting the phone so you can always choose not to if you so choose. Plus i'm with O2 and they never lock their phones so it's not an issue for me. :giggle:

It's just business and competition mate :)

Thats how I see it.

Well I think all major PAYG networks lock phone, this is after you purchased it!

Most contract phones are unlocked except I think Orange.

I've always stuck with O2 for this exact reason, even though they treat me like dirt sometimes.

Totally agree~

and plus if your phone gets stolen and report it , it shall be barred and newer phones can only be unlocked by providers so if taken abroad its useless.

Unlocked phones sell a lot easier and for more money, than locked phones offline and on ebay. Hence why I like them to be unlocked.

My O2 phone is locked, as was the previous 2 I had....

Good thing about phones from carphonewarehouse though is that all the phones are unlocked!

a new load of phones that he cant unlock and if someone can they charge around £50 - £60 , cheaper to buy a new phone

woah he trying to rip you off hard. it costs 20 quid max to unlock a new phone from the network direct. but say the phones really new like for example the release date of the phone is today the network will say you can do it in 3 months time but doesnt matter if the phone is supplied new like a n73 is roughly a 2 years old model but still provided new and this can be done as its a old handset.

Pay as you go ones :)

i think its fair some phones such as the n95 cost about £350 retail from nokia so the networks subsidise that cost

N73 is just over a year old, hence why shops won't ask for your receipt as they know the phones aren't 2yrs old yet and out of warranty.
