Is it possible to connect a 3.5" SATA Hard Drive to a laptop with a free SATA slot temporarily?

I've got a 3.5" SATA hdd which i want to quickly extract data from and copy to an external hard drive. I have a Dell Studio 17 laptop which has SATA connections and one Hard drive slot free. I've read that both 2.5" and 3.5" hard drives use the same connection but my worry is that power might be a problem.

Could anyone advise if its possible
Thanks in advance

power from laptop is fine, however the form factor will limit you in the way you connect you should (will ) not be able to slot it in (diff size spacing etc) you will need a cable to connect eg power and sata cable.. However just Co's there is a slot for 2nd hard drive does not mean it's got the sata headers to connect. (it might though)

Or buy a sata to usb adapter that comes with psu

Has your laptop not got an e-sata port by psu/ + esats to sata cable/ or just buy a 3.5 external drive kit
