I have some family in Ireland who are unable to get broadband through phoneline or cable etc.

I suggested they get a 3g internet dongle which works but they need to be upstairs for it to get a signal.

I am wanting to buy whatever is needed to get internet everywhere else in the house leaving the dongle at the window next to the computer upstairs.

If I plug a usb dongle into the usb port and then a network cable from the pc to a wireless router does anyone know if it will give me a wireless signal?

Or will the homeplugs work with this setup?

Or what about a router with a usb port?

Any ideas appreciated!

None of the above are likely to work.
Though you could share it via the computer near the window (but it would have to be on all the time).

What you want is something like this:

You first suggestion should work fine. Make sure you get a wireless router that has an ethernet upload port, as opposed to one that has an ADSL port. I happen to have such a router for cheap...PM me if you're interested.

I'm interested but will not deal by pm, how much are you looking for it? If it will work and the price is right you can list it up in fs/ft:thumbsup:

Yes I don't mind leaving the pc upstairs switched on.

The router you link to is £69.99 though:o

What, as in a wireless card like this? As I say I dont mind leaving the upstairs pc turned on, just need to use laptop etc downstairs. It's already running xp so no problems there.

Didnt think this would work though:?

Thanks for the replies so far, rep is on the way:thumbsup:

So if I plug one into the usb upstairs I will be able to connect to the internet from a laptop downstairs:o

Actually yeah, good point. Any wireless card should do the trick, although 802.11b may not have the strength/range in your house. You may have to play with the metrics on the adaptors to make it work properly.

In what part of mexico do they live? Do they know that there's quite a few wireless internet providers in Ireland? They can be quite expensive though.

Search thingy - http://www.getbroadband.ie/default.php (it's not exactly impartial)

A few providers -

They're in the middle of nowhere, the phoneline from the top of the lane only serves them. Tried the wireless suppliers too:viking:

Will buy one then and send it over:thumbsup:

Didn't expect it to work though:lol: I thought you could only use them to connect to a router:oops:
