I bought a dvd for my son from play.com and it won't play on our expensive dvd player in our front room (fine with any other dvd) but it will play on the cheapy dvd player in our sons room.
when I put it in our dvd player downstairs it just says disc error

Have you checked the Region on the DVD?

Perhaps your really expensive DVD player isn't multi-region, whereas the cheapy one is?

Yes, thats ok.

What are the other DVD region's that play? Do you have a DVD Cleaning disc? Could try giving it a clean...

just had a quick look through and all are region 2, haven't got a cleaning disc.I'll get one when I get to town. thanks for your advice, repped.
just made me wonder as I thought pirate dvds worked on cheaper players and not better quality ones, obviously its not a pirate but it maybe it was a poor quality dvd?
I'll give the cleaner a go, thanks

True, my sister's does this all the time yet her cheapo one in the bedroom will play them, it's because (as said above) the cheaper one won't pick up tiny scratches whereas the more expensive one will look for every imperfection going to give a better picture, any blip and it won't play it, so there are advantages to not spending too much money!!

I bought a sealed copy of Shaun of the Dead from Play and that didn't work on my Toshiba player but did work on my Panasonic.

strange isnt it?! do you think I should ask to exchange it or banish my son to his room to watch it?! lol

lol it's the other way around though in this case.

Saying that price doesn't always equate to quality.

It might be a slight error on the disc that disagrees with the DVD player in this instance. Bit like the odd CD you get that might skip on certain parts of the disc on certain CD players.

Could be down to the quality of the laser in the unit as well as the alignment of lasers reflection of the surface of the disk, as well as the actual print of the disk, I have had it with DVD ROM drives with PC's whereby certain disks are read by one of my drives but not the other, I think its down to the laser alignment and the disk surface, during manufacture process you can get variances in quality of print I believe, certainly have found this on a number of occassions with magazine cover disks etc.

You can unlock your dvd player to make it multi region, loads of free sites on the net to unlock

Copy it to a DVD-R and consign the original to the drawer.
