Is it true that calling Lebara and LycaMobile is now charged at international call rates and outside your allowance on any network?

My friend spoke to T-mobile rep and was told that apparently a big meeting was recently held between all the mobile phone companies and they've come to the conclusion that Lycamobile and Lebara are foreign networks and should no longer be considered as a UK network.

This means that whenever you call someone on one these networks, you'll not only be billed outside your line rental allowance but also charged international rates from your mobile, can anyone confirm this is the case?

I think this is crazy, as how are we supposed to know who is on these networks without a foreign number in place and it's not like we're going to ask every person we come in contact which network are they on.

Surely there should be some procedures to protect us from this before this is enforced, if at all.

Well there will be something in your t&c's which list certain codes 07xxx as being international and they can charge internationally for them. Worth checking if the codes are on there. It'll probably also say that it's your responsibility to keep yourself up to date with the codes rather than then having to tell you of any changes.

Also they can charge internationally for a dial through service even though it may appear to be part of your inclusive minutes. That's usually in the t&c's for these companies.

It's been the case for a long time that certain numbers are charged at international rates.

WOW!

As I said, it's something that has been rolling out over the last few years. The problem with these networks is that they're not proper networks, they are NMO's or whatever they're called.

Just to make the issue more confusing: I wanted to transfer my old number from Lebara to T-Mobile (it was originally issued by BT Mobile and I transferred it to Lebara a year ago). T-Mobile are now trying to tell me that by being used on Lebara the number has become a non-UK number and even with moving it to T-Mobile through a PAC code it will remain a non-UK number with calls and texts to it being charged on top of people's free minutes and texts. I requested T-Mobile to explain this to me in writing so that I could take the matter further to the regulator but mysteriously, they insist on only speaking to me about it and keep on sending me emails prompting me to answer their calls to discuss the matter. Somehow, I am thinking that T-Mobile are not very clean on this.

Tesco confirmed to a friend of mine that calls to Lyca WERE included in the inclusive minutes.

I guess this is a valid issue, that the Lyca and Lebara numbers look no different other than if you scan the first 5 digits of the number you want to call before making any call. Ideally they should have kept the numbers distinct if they are counted as international numbers e.g. should have made them to look something like to start with 06XXX instead of 07XXX . Ofcom should bring some regulation on this as lot of customers will end up paying hundreds of extra pounds calling/texting these numbers.

Yep, I think this is more of a reaction to the way that some companies have tried to make money out of the 07 number system. If Ofcom or whoever had realised earlier they probably would've given a seperate number system to make it more obvious.

Bump up this post because I was a victim of this lastnight calling from my tmobile network to a lyca mobile number for 36mins which I saw the unbilled charge as £9.14 exclude VAT. Managed to get tmobile to waived the charge, the CS agent said ofcom wants them and other major networks to look into this issue soon or something to that effect.

CS agent said the following numbers are also Lyca mobile and chargable.

This needs to change for the protection of us the customers. We cant be made to ask what network the person on the other end is on. OFCOM needs to sort this out asap.

I have just spoken to ofcom, their point is it's up to the mobile network who to charge our calls to, a commercial decision of t mobile. I pointed out that the terms on the inclusive allowance states all uk mobile networks; Lyca and lebra mobiles are classed as Uk mobile networks, so it is misleading from T mobile.

The following are the terms of T-mobile's contract we took out:

Plan costs

Inclusive minutes and texts are from the UK to all UK mobiles and numbers starting with 01, 02 or 03 at any time. This doesn't cover Jersey, Guernsey and the Isle of Man. The following costs apply to all inclusive minutes and texts - plus all call and messages outside of your allowance - anytime, to any UK network.
Calls Texts Picture messages Voicemail Internet on your phone
30.6p a minute 12.3p each 20.4p each 12.3p a minute £1.02 a day maximum unless internet is included or free with plan and then 500MB per month. Fair use policy applies (of data both sent and received in the UK)

Calls to Customer Services advisors are free on pay monthly plans and charged at 25.5p a call for SIM only plans

All numbers starting with:
0843, 0844, 0845, 0870, 0871, 0872 0808, 0800 0500 070
12.40p a minute 7.40p a minute 7.40p a minute From 25.5p to 76.6p a minute

All chargeable calls will be subject to a one minute minimum charge unless otherwise stated.


Basically we now have the option to register our complain with t mobile that their terms are misleading, if not resolved to our satisfaction, take the complain to CISAS, ombudsman for t mobile. There are a number of ways this may turn out:

1: We can cancel our contract without owing t mobile anything
2: T mobile wont budge and not allow us to cancel contract
3: Take the complain to CISAS and hope they decide in our favour
4: T mobile decide to include Lyca/Lebra mobile as part of inclusive allowance (wouldn't hold my breathe on this given what I have read so far from other customers)

I spoke with t-mobile CS and she claims that all other providers except O2 charge on the Lyca & Lebara numbers. Can someone confirm if this is correct for Vodafone, 3, Orange etc?

Hi,
I have a 3 mobile. When I have tried to call a few numbers, I get the message that the number is not recognised. Later I found out that those numbers were Lyca. So they can call me and I can see their name cos I have saved it, but i cant call them back. well, I guess its better than getting charged for it. They all have other numbers :-)

You will struggle to cancel your contract based on any charges you incur based on calling international numbers via Lebara or Lyca. Its the same as using a calling card.
Dont forget these services are a diversion service, allowing you to call international numbers at "local rates". All these numbers will start with specific prefixes and the costs should be available on your providers website.

O2's Ts and Cs with regards to "Special Numbers"
This page tells you about the charges for calls from the UK to special numbers, which do not form part of your inclusive minutes allowance on any Pay Monthly tariffs or your free minutes allowance on any Pay & Go tariffs.

today i discovered that my first t-mobile bill was pretty high so i rang t-mobile and asked why i had been charged for ringing my friend (who's on lyca) they said exactly what they have told most of you above about it being a foreigner number atc

however from different forum i heard that T-mobile had fallen out with lyca in winning their tender to provide lycas customers with signal and they had damn them since then. thats why they not get the ssignal from Orange & O2.

No one else charges for lyca but t-mobile. I had tescos which uses O2 signal and called lyca many times without charges my friend had 3 and called lyca without any charges same for orange and vodafone

Please complain as much as you can about this so t-mobile changes theoir mind

I'll be leaving T-mobile in 2 weeks time because of this. They keep calling to ask why I'm leaving; I just say "Lycamobile" and hang up. This is daylight robbery since there's no easy or intuitive way of telling when you're calling a Lyca number! I've been angry about this for all 18 months of my contract. Stay clear of T-mobile!!

i took a deal wich t bobile will give me £180 to spend even on international calls and i asked if it will include lyca and lebara they said yess as they are considered international ,now im being charged extra for calling them when i spoke to t mobile they said u will always have to pay to call lyca and lebara and if i want to cancell it will cost me over 400 pounds ,im totally vexed and can do nothing about it

Whenever I call lyca mobile or send any text message I am charged. Just now I checked my bill online and found that calling on lyca mobile for 00:00:10 cost me 36 pence for which now I have decided I am going to cancel my Tmobile contract although its only 6 months I am in a 24 month contract and dont know if they are going to charge me extra money!!!

I was biten by t-mobile lyca fiasco. I am seriously considering cancelling the contract with them as they could not even inform customers through IVR that they would be charged for the call. Just outragious, t-mobile are to be blamed for systems they implement.
