When i left work and the company closed I bought a laptop from them, was told it only needed a new hard drive. My dad got me a hard drive and it still dont work. Its a Compaq Evo N610C but thats all i can tell you apart from when u switch it on it says Non-system disk or disk error, is it worth trying to fix or just sell on

Thanx in advance

could be because you havent got windows installed on the hdd

doesn't the hard drive contain the operating system so they told you wrong me thinks

When you installed the new hard drive, did you actually install Windows onto it? I'm assuming from what you have said that you have not but I'm reading between the lines a bit. Please go into more detail about exactly what you did once you replaced the hard drive.

My dad installed the new hard drive with operating systems but still nothing

(sorry not into computers really so dont know much)

I'd dismantle it and sell it as parts on eBay.

Right just spoke to dad, he said installed windows on hard drive using his laptop and it worked fine, but not reading it on this
banned#7
ok how much do you want for it

Going by your knowledge of the technical aspects of laptops, I'd suggest handing it back to your dad as anything that me or anyone else on here suggests to you is probably going to be beyond your abilities (I don't want to sound insulting but it appears to be true). Try sell it for what you can and put the money towards buying a new one that will allow you to start with a fully working system.

go into BIOS and make sure it's set up to boot from HDD and that it is actually detecting the HDD. He shouldn't install Windows from his laptop either as it will have all the drivers for his laptop not yours, even if it did load up it would probably crash straight away anyway.

After just reading that post, better not. He doesn't sound as if he is much better either. Sell the thing for a few quid and walk away.

I paid a bit more than a few quid for it and cannot afford to lose any money at the mo with no job

Well I paid about £50 all in so would need that back really

download hirens boot disk, use the tools to check and format / partition the new drive... then put windows etc on it.. If the hdd is faulty the disk should tell you.
#15
Surely you can't install Windows using one laptop and then put it in another! Wouldn't there be conflicts?
#16
Make sure you haven't left a CD/DVD in the drive first. :w00t:
#17
reformat the hard drive .
put in the computer you want it in and reinstall windows .
this will work!
#18
Either
a. there is a floppy disk in the drive and its trying to boot from that (or a cd as someone else said)
or
b. the BIOS has the settings entered for original hdd and therefore is trying to read the hdd wrong
presumably the hdd is working as your did has installed widows to it, but using that install is not a good idea as has been said.
also just making sure the hdd is fitted securely.is a good idea

Sorry my error, he installed windows on HDD and still wasnt working, so tried re-installing on different laptop to make sure wasnt hard drive.

have you installed windows on this laptop though? i.e with the drive in this laptop? if you have and it is still not working it could potentially be that the BIOS is either not picking up the HDD and therefore you need to manually change it, or there is some problem with the connections. (between the laptop and HDD).

Yes it has been and the BIOS has not been checked

I think my best bet is as somebody else said dismantle and sell

Do you still need to get rid of this? Looking for some repair projects to have a go at?
