Is my internet being leached?

Do you ever get periods where your watching iPlayer or Youtube and suddenly it starts pausing or buffering?

Could this be because someone is leaching your Internet through your wireless connection?

Despite passwords and encryption it still seems to occur?

So whats really going on?

disable wireless, change the wireless key to something randomly obscene, test extensively!

make sure you change the router's default password as doing the above maybe pointless then!

It's fine, it's been asked hundreds of times. If you did t find what you were after from that article then just read through the rest.

yeah but my sister round the corner has zero problems and with a bigger family has more heavy usage of iplayer/youtube.

Set your router up so that only pre-registered devices are allowed to access it, also check your access logs and it'll show you if other machines have connected. It's probably just due to the number of people in your area online at the same time.

I just need to brush up on my networking skills and I should be able to sort things out. If it is still slow after that then obviously its VM's fault.

Yeah i'm going to get back into my networking skills and sort this out. I know VM has a lower contention ratio than most ISPs but its still something like 25:1 (if I remember correctly).

I'm on Virgin 10meg too, and internet is very quick most of the time and get a constant 10 meg + on newsgroups, but youtube is always slow.

I reckon they must put a limit on youtube traffic.

Don't bother setting up MAC address filtering, it's pretty much pointless as it's so easy to clone. Just make sure you use a strong password (a random 32 character password made up of letters, numbers, and symbols is a start) and configure WPA2 encryption.

I don't know about anybody else but I've been using it to leach illegal film downloads. :p

Will stop now though. (_;)
