Is my (original) xbox on its way out?

Its a soft modded one, always had issues with ftping to it, sometimes takes a hour or two to work then randomly does then it works for a day or two then stops again.

I tried ftping last week and despite it connecting it either crashed trying to get access to the hard drive or it wouldnt let me transfer to it despite over 80 gig left on the partition.

Just tried some tv shows on a usb pen drive using the controller to usb cable and none worked, one did start but crashed after a minute.

It just scans the avi as normal then nothing and if you try and click on another,.nothing and then once or twice more it gives you a error message saying too many failed connections.

You mean the softmod? never done it since I got it, it came pre installed with the softmod.

Strangely all the emulators work fine though,

I have been meaning to do something like that for a while since the current HD is like 120 gig and I want a larger one in since I have about 2 dozen(legal) games I wanted to install but didnt have the space to do it.

I know the dvd drive is failing though as often when playing a dvd it sometimes speeds up then makes a minor click noise then goes back to menu.

Probably cheaper to get a replacement xbox than parts though I will maybe buy a cheap one from market and softmod it and keep this as a spare as the controller is faulty too(wow great lol not a very reliable one I got!)

Might do that then, but I keep meaning to give it a go as I also want to update my modified 360 so I dont need a boot disc every time and just to be up to date so that would be similar.

The reason I havent tried getting the eeprom yet myself is I am a bit worried about connecting the cable to pc whilst powered on same for my 360 though the 360 one sounds easier.

FTP connectivity issues are usually firewall and/or windows networking issues, btw do u have static ip on your xbox?

Yep all done as various guides say, I just assumed it was some sort of corruption since often to get it working I have to change to automatic settings, disable ftp, go back to dashboard, then back to ip settings and enable ftp and change back to manual, then it works until I have my xbox powered off a certain amount of time(like over 2 days) then I have to go through that again.

This now sounds even more like a firewall / windows problem!

Not really since I have tried disabling the firewall and tried both desktop and laptop with the same issues, and used to have another laptop with the same problems.

I forgot to say the usb drive worked in the end after I blew air into the cable and pen drive it would be good if I can get the ftp working each time though since I often want to transfer large files that if transferred by usb may take as much as 20-30 minutes and its like 2-3 minutes via ftp if now faster.
