Is my two year old clever?

Hi,

My son is 2 years 5 months old and can recognise all letters of the alphabet and the numbers 1 - 10 in any order you give him them from any book, laptop etc we give him. The daft thing is he cant talk much yet and has to see a speech specialist as he has trouble putting words together, we know what he is saying but no one else does lol.

Or is it just routine and what any child of his age can do?

My 3 year old is the same, he learnt to count to 10 at 18 months, can recognise numbers (and has done for a while), and is also very good with letters, emotional recognition etc. He also has speech issues just like your LO, well you can't have everything, no doubt if they weren't so clever, they would be fabulous talkers lol!!

I think some of it is routine, however this is the way people learn, you only know things because you are taught them, and repetition etc!!

Just for comparison my boy just turned three on Wednesday. He can count to over 20, and recognise some letters. His speech is excellent though, and has been for some time.

p.s. My son could not put 2 words together till about 2 and half, he has in the 6 months since learnt to use full sentences so don't worry too much bout that aspect!

my little girl is 2 years 4 months at home she is a very bright little thing and can say proper sentaces .... a couple from today

' mummy you got a towel'
'dont tell me to come here'
' theo go away now'
and
'i love pink blankie'

My little girl can count to 7 with out any help and to 12 with little help..

Alphabet not so good she say a b c d ebut then has no idea...

But when we are out seeing health visitor she will not say a word and mumbles alot .Then when they try to push he she gets upset. So i think she is just shy even as a baby she didnt strangers. But round family and friends she wont stop chatting .

Each kid will bring together words in their own time.

I wouldnt worry for at least another year yet but would deffo keep a eye on it and encourage speech..... like let the child finish off your sentence.

If you have any worrys talk to your hv xxx

My son could do this at about same age and could tell difference between upper and lower case letters also, yet struggled to ask me for something like a drink,he is autistic. Whatever reason there is for it,it's a good thing,my daughter 6 and still don't know her alphabet.

Well I think that people wouldn't be talking about their kids being clever if they weren't happy and healthy lol!

Yeah scare them why dont ya.

Sounds normal, both my kids had the same, could recognise colours, letters and numbers by this age. Its just cos you are a dedicated parent willing to sit down and teach your children the basics.

Dont worry about the speech, it will come in time
