I seem to remember its illegal, but nowhere near sure.

Obviously emergency services have been using them in the Pennines, but don't think they are road legal.

edit: it seems apparent that they ARE legal.

used them for years on my Clio
BTW gets around better than my 4x4 on icy roads

You can use them, hire shops are renting them out at the minute. Was debating getting some, used them in Bosnia 10 years ago.

I couldn't give a damn if you believe me or not. The only reason I didn't report you was that you had already been suspended. I laughed out loud. Multiple times. Happy tagging son.

You find them hard to fit, or does your driver do it?
#19
I could use a set of chains, my car is stranded on a hill and has been for 3 nights now!

Why would a garage fit them, what you gonna do when you need to take them off? What do you do when you move from a non gritted B road to a gritted A road or Motorway?

It's illegal to use them on Tarmac roads though & you can go over 30mph.

Using them anywhere other than on snow will also rip chunks out of your tyres !!

Then when you drive to a icy/snowy B road that hasn't been touched by the gritter lorry, what do you do then?

you put a question mark at the end which implies your asking a question, but I can't find the question your trying to ask.

Don't worry he will ignore you finding him out that he's only 15.

Or he will come back with some googling.:)

Not worth putting them on unless we get sustained snow in my area.

do it. made a lovely noise at 50mph. we lived in a village that was on a steep hill. that car never struggled once.

having read thru the replies here, i think I will get one whether or not it's illegal or not. I'll take my chances albeit I will remove the chain as soon as I reach clear road).

the last thing i want is to be stranded in snow

My bike cost 73k with extras including the chains (solid gold) the snow tyres and spare tyres and my £120 Rover Metro Rio 1.1 93 Reg would leave your BMW in the ditch
