As for wireless there's no way to do it, you can run a Linux livecd on the Xbox which gives you full USB support but only when your using Linux

Another option is using homeplugs

Shouldnt matter what cable you use. It should have an auto sensing port.

ebay item: 200242695776

not sure if could link to directly. this will convert your straight 'patch' cable to a crossover (£1.88 delivered)

I understand that the little adapter you have RedIron is the same as that ebay Item, it effectively converts a Patch cable to a crossover cable?

What exactly do you do when you connect a crossover to PC to XBOX?

I have a wireless NIC card?

Yes it's the same thing, it all does it vice versa (so a crossover to patch, it's a very handy thing to have)

It should just do it automatically, I believe when you first softmod your Xbox it is already configured to be connected to a a PC via a crossover cable.

This will tell you all you need t know anyway (Scroll down to Setting up Configuration 2)

By the way did you see my post last night about using chimp to clone your xbox HD rather than going through the normal method?

Yeh saw your post last night.
Yep then, please can I have the crossover patch thingy. Assuming your MC arrives tommorow I'll softmod it tomorrow and get it back off to you tomorrow.

Easiest way is wirelessly with a gaming adaptor as stated, its just a small box with 1 or 2 aerals that is connected to a power supply to get power, and ethernet to pc to tell it your network password and name then it connects to the console by ethernet.

Thats how I did my Gamecube and PS2 and Xbox 360

For future reference, you can get a Fonera access point, put DD-WRT on it and use that for connecting devices wirelessly to your network :)
