Especially with the release of 'Project Natal' possibly this year or when do Microsoft plan on creating a new console.

I was just lamenting the strategy of console developers now. I can kind of see where they're coming from but I like a new console every 5 years or so.

I'm pretty sure that was a 'leak' of what the 360 was supposed to look like, i've definitely seen the picture before and never read anything about a new console. I think it will be at least 3 years.

Although an xbox360 slim'n'quiet would be nice :-D

Lol.. We won't see a new console from Microsoft or Sony for a couple of years. Nintendo might come out with a revamped stronger version of the Wii, but I don't expect that to happen until sales really drop off

Neither. It is a fake picture.

And whilst I don't like being patronising, using your head will get you to the answer to your question. If Microsoft were intending to release a brand new console this year, the hype would be up to a pretty decent level by now. New versions of the Xbox 360 can be released at shorter notice, but on that front there have been no such rumours that I am aware of.

Project Natal is a peripheral, and will not require a new console or new version of the current console.

There has been rumour of a 360 with built in project natal technology, but that is it nto a whole console.

Hadn't heard about that, but Google tells me that Balmer announced that in June. Either way no doubt you'll be able to buy it all separately as well.

I think the original Xbox was retired far too early and at short notice

I doubt if Micosoft will give you a great deal of notice of the end of 360, or it hurts sales and people might wait
but 5 years more? no way 1 year to 18 months max,

microsoft will want to kick start the next gen and be first again

It would be a huge surprise if Microsoft announce a new console anytime soon for various reasons which all sums up to being no reason to step into another generation of gaming.

Reasons such as the longevity of the console should be extended due to the services regularly expanding (games on demand, twitter, facebook, movies on demand, sky sports), games line-up and hardware (natal).

One thing to remember is that Natal is not just being set to be another means of gaming, it is also a means of interaction and navigation. So with Microsoft's support and the growing trend for independent games, publishers big and small will be getting in on how to maximise Natal's potential.

Also there is speculation that Natal would firstly be distributed with the console and would be cheap (cost price albeit slightly more) to purchase for current console owners - Commentators have predicted and commended this plan for it enables an accelerated install base of people using Natal and be exposed to the applications and games that utilises it.

Microsoft also intend to extend the lifespan of the 360 with their online services recently expanded to include Netflix (hd video on-demand in the US), Sky Sports (in the UK) as well as games on-demand constantly expanding library and their back catalogue of arcade games. They have also put emphasis on the social side of gaming entertainment with using last.fm, twitter, facebook and the recently announced Game Arcade.

Lastly (because this post is getting a tad long) imo Microsoft have no reason to develop a new generation console - graphically speaking it's not bad at all and future games show that there is still potential for more to come out of the machine (example being the new Crysis engine).

They already have a massive install base of players who are contempt and impressed with the games and services that are already on offer so is it really viable to split that with a new console? If they do develop a new console would people even bother upgrading? Would the price of a theoretical new console be justified?

The only "new" console Microsoft might be planning maybe in regards to the internal hardware in the 360 console, perhaps in design/parts to increase reliability - although in all fairness the newest iteration of the console (Jasper chipset) is reliable enough... right?

PS: Not a fanboy, I don't even own a 360 any more. :p

Not atm no. That picture is fake. Sony and Xbox are trying to prolong the life for the consoles for as long as possible. Considering the cost to make a new console and both the PS3 and xbox are probably just about starting to make a profit, though I think the ps3 is still selling at a loss

I wouldnt be suprised if there was a new bundle with natal BUT no new console - whats the point the 360 looks slim as it is and does its job

Next xbxo i wouldnt be suprised around 2013ish and announcement around 2012
