Listed my laptop for sale on friday-ad and got email from uk email address asking what best price is and we've agreed a price but they say they work in airport and would i post it if they pay via paypal, and that they'll pay an extra 40 for postage (which seems like alot!)

if they paypal gift it does that mean that they can't later claim the money back or complain that it is faulty when it isn't?

Of course my friend, easily done. Even checking the IP and it coming back as U.K based is still easy to get around. i was just simply saying what i thought the Thread starter was referring to. but i know what you mean.

Oh dear, I really am naive aren't I? Or just a bit dense in thinking that you have to be from the uk to get a .co.uk.... just as well you lot are around to tell me otherwise :)

My gf and I are moving soon but we used an estate agent, not gumtree =D

I know, I'm just naive as I said and I don't expect people to be out to scam.... perhaps I'd be better off thinking everyone was dishonest and that way I won't get burned but it's just not in my nature really. At least I got this one before I got swindled!!
Still trying to get deposit back- solicitor (my dad!) spoke to him and threatened all sorts of legal/police action and he has til sunday to return money or we'll proceed with that so it's just a waiting game really. Won't be using gumtree again though, which is a shame because I imagine that the majority of listings on there ARE genuine.

I'm even more cautious than you, I had a look on gumtree and found some nice places but didn't go for them because I just don't trust people :w00t:

Have you found a new place or are you gonna have to save up again before moving?

Your approach is very sensible- we'll be going the agent route next time even if it means paying a bit more deposit/ admin. We haven't found anywhere else yet- I'm still stinging a bit from what happened and we are lucky in that we can crash with our parents so we're just taking our time, seeing if we get the money back and if not it'll probably be the end of July provided we find somewhere.
When do you move in with your gf? Exciting times!!

We had to pay a £200 admin fee and I think it's £750odd deposit but I also have to pay 6 months rent in advance to avoid a £75 garantor fee.... I can see why avoiding all these fees is appealing as they nearly put us off moving but my gf fell in love with the place after viewing it.

We put the application in last thursday and they are doing a credit check on us but I think the manager of the estate agent likes us (we started talking about hamsters!) and they hinted that they might not let anyone else apply. We are hoping to move in on the 24th of July and i'm very excited :-D

Good ol' bank of mum and dad, i'm also very lucky that my parents have money as I do not work but I am due for a big payout from a motorbike accident 19 months ago so my dad is happy to give me money because he knows he'll get it back eventually.

So he works 24/7 at the airport ??

Ask him to send cash via recorded delivery or NO DEAL. There are plenty more other buyers out there.

Just because it's a uk mail addy, doesn't make it genuine.

Ahh I'm jealous, I can't wait to move in with my boyf (even if it has been soured abit by this stupid scammer!)
I'm sure if they're doing a credit check the place is basically yours! All the best for the move, let us know how it goes.

I've told them i only want a face to face transaction and had no reply so i guess that solves that one for me! I'm feeling quite pleased that I (with the help of HUKD obv!) caught this one!

We've been living together for 9 months now, we moved in together near the uni she got accepted in otherwise it would have been a pain to see each other.

I'm not sure what my credit is like but it should be ok as i've been paying for rent/bills for the last 9 months.

My hamster is sooo naughty, she keeps leaping off the sofa while im trying to type this!

Anyway i'm off to bed, thanks everyone for the advice and stopping me getting scammed! Night all xx
