Is this a Scam on Gumtree?

Hi,
Ive found a new iphone for a good price. Contacted the person and unfortunately theyre too far away for pickup. They seem nice enough but want a £40 deposit paid into their bank account before they send it...
Is this safe? If they don't send it can what can I do?
Thanks

If they don't send it can what can I do? - Very little, unless you went straight to their house.

how about you arrange courier to collect it?

I wouldnt touch it with a barge pole - there is no way you can get your money back from a bank transfer
Use Paypal and then at leats your covered this way if you want to go ahead and use your CC for extra protection

Thats an idea but they could just turn the guy away saying wrong house or something? How do people usually safely deal on gumtree?

By writing an email saying

"Hi, I'd like to buy X if it's still available. Here;s when I'm availalbe. What times suit you? Is it alright if I collect, or would you rather meet somewhere? My mobile's XXXX if you want to drop me a text"

They then get back to you, a couple more emails go back and forth arranging times and places, then you go over at the specified time and pick the goods up. You never send things.

Gumtree is designed so that you deal face to face.

Bank details are worth nothing, the bank will not disclose any info about the account to you so you will not be able to contact anyone from it. Police will not be interested as you have to prove it was the intention of that person not to supply the goods you paid for!! I know I have been there.
If it is too far to collect .. forget it and if that was the price it was for sale at then it just proves it was a scam... If a deal looks too good t...blah blah

If that's the price it was up for, then it's got to be either bust, nicked or a scam mate.

I'd be vary wary of buying phones from gumtree.
There's a scam going round where they'll sell you "a brand new in box upgrade handset that they don't want".
They show it to you, and it works fine. You buy it and go home happy with that bargain. The seller then reports that handset as stolen and claims a new handset on their insurance, of course, the handset they sold you is blocked and you're left with a brick and not much you can do about it.

If it sounds too good to be true it normally is

You would be as well setting fire to 4 new crisp ten pound notes
