...i'm off on holiday at the end of may to mexico, and i went to my travel agent today to see if there was any news regarding my holiday and nearly all the reps advised us not to worry at all....we are 800 miles away and it should be fine....

all these new reports seem to be making a big hoo haa of it all, creating mass panic in everyone....i think its disgusting and if it was that bad they holiday makers would be telling everybody straight away!

what are your views!?

well it has the potential to be a worldwide pandemic, it has in fact done what bird flu has threatened to do. TBH you may as well go as its not going to kill you if you get it, and your far away from it anyway. However, your going away in a months time and there are more and more cases each day (plus undiagnosed cases) so you maybe have to reassess the situation in a week or two.

massive over reaction

Its not bad yet but it could be.if it is that virulent we will all get it eventually so just make sure you are covered with your insurance and take reasonable precautions,

as I said, its done what bired flu and SARS has threatened to do - it has been genetically rearranged with another virus to enable human to human spread, and because its a new virus, no one has any immunity to it and so it can spread very very easily

10% of cases leading to death and no current vaccine

Not an overreaction as i see it

Just said on news, 2 with it in Scotland, but no fatalities outside of Mexico.
Just to be on the safe side, where do you get them Michael Jackson face masks from?
#9

they would only give masks to people with the virus, who should be told to stay isolated in their own homes so shouldnt need it anyway.

149 dead doesn't seem like an overreaction to me.

yeah cos terrorism is made up for the papers. good one.

it makes me laugh.....theres more than 20 million people living in mexico city....and theyve still said health commissioners are still saying that its ok to travel to mexico city, and if u do....just be careful! im going no matter what, i've paid enough and my holiday is far away from mexico city! its like telling people not to go mexico because of the drug war.......like mexico city is the ONLY place to go there! its just scare tactics and making a fuss over something thats not done much yet!

Thats not the point, i want them to look cool, not for safety reasons..........lol!!!
#16
I actually don't think it is a over reaction to be honest, 149 people dead, proves that this could be a even bigger MASSIVE problem.

yeah it will probably be fine to go where you are going so I wouldnt worry. The mexican government of course will say its safe to come, they get a large percentage of their GDP from tourism
#18
weve got enough drugs stockpiled for half the uk population.......we call that well prepared!!

1 way to wittle down the population.....to a managable level
#19
tinkerbell28
I am aware, I do also have a medical background. We also have 2 very good anti viral drugs in this country. Yes swine flu spreads from person to person, it would be far more dangerous if full bird flu could do this.
Swine flu is relatively managable if you have enough of the anti virals. It's a mass media over reaction, I can see it's working well.

thats right, we have anti influenza drugs that will sort it out no problem, eg tamiflu or amantadine

have a word with your travel agent mate and play it by ear, its only in the first few days so who knows whats gonna happen yet...

most flights can be changed to other countries free of charge depending on who you booked with

make sure you take proper insurance out tho and check the details of whats covered.....

been warned off going to se asia countless times and never had a problem.....

still to earlt to say for defo whats gonna happen yet tho until we know more

Enjoy it :) The situation will be monitored and if at anytime it's deemed too unsafe to travel and the GOVT makes it a no go zone, you will get your money back.

thankyou. i really am so excited and it just seems to be casting a dark cloud over it all! i cannot wait to get out there....if anything some people might even cancel holidays and leave me in peace at the hotel

the 2 confirmed scots cases werent in mexico city-they were hundreds of miles away-noone knows how they contracted it yet.

apparently the masks are only effective for a few hours anyway-you need to keep changing them-once they become moist they are EVEN MORE likely to help the spread of disease.

your travel agent may change your destinaton with no penalty-dont think insurance will pay unless uk government issue a dont travel warning.
#34
I think this is the best way to keep informed.

At the moment its a phase 3 alert and a pandemic is phase 6. If it moves to phase 4 this is where it gets interesting as this is when it passed from human to human which raises a significant increase in the risk of a pandemic.

The chances of it moving to phase 4 are probably reduced if everyone follows this advice

Travel advice for Mexico
The Foreign Office has not changed its advice on travelling to the affected areas of Mexico or the United States.

The FCO says that visitors to Mexico should be aware of the outbreak of influenza: "The federal Health Ministry issued a nationwide alert on 22 April after learning that a number of people had died from what appears to be a new form of influenza.

"Cases have been reported in Mexico City, together with the states of Oaxaca, San Luis Potosi, Mexicali and Baja California. Travellers should consult a doctor immediately if they show signs of flu-like symptoms.

"The Mexican Secretariat of Health has advised people to avoid large crowds, shaking hands, kissing people as a greeting, or using the subway. Maintaining a distance of at least six feet from other persons and frequent hand washing may decrease the risk of exposure."

Hence one of the reasons folk are seen wearing masks.

I'm willing to bet that since this thing broke more than 150 people in mexico have died of cancer, heart failure, car accidents, being shot, hell probably from eating chilli the point is I wouldn't worry about swine flu as your probably more likely to die from the above or in fact be kidnapped.
#37
where do you live btw and when you due back......

just wanna maken sure im not in the area!!

Yes it's a shame, but Wiki says their are 9 million in Mexico City, or 22 million in Greater Mexico City.

Using the lower figure of 9 million

(149 / 9000000) x 100 = 0.0017%

Hardly a major epidemic!

I'm willing to guess a higher percentage die of MRSA here.

totally irrelevent. You have to look at the figures for the normal mortality rates for infuenza illnesses, and compare them now, they are vastly different, and so you have a much greater chance to dieing from this virus, whereas the things you have described above the rates are not changing.
