This is an Asus one off computer with an Asrock AM2NF4G-SATA2 motherboard, 80Gbs SATA hard drive, AMD Athlon 64 X2 4200+ dual core processor, Nvidia Geoforce 8400GS PCI-Express 512Mbs graphics card, 1GB DDR 2 ram memory, hardly used DVDRW + DVD roms, and 450W power supply unit.

im a bit of a novice but im guessing you will need more ram and more hardrive, graphics card is quite good though

agreed, more RAM and hard drive space needed should be SATA 2 hard drive too

A budget brand motherboard, not well renound.

The main problem is the weak processor (several generations behind) and the graphics card is also very weak. The 8400 is last years budget end of the range Nvidia card.
I guess it is average value for money for the price, but not the most suitable for gaming.

Not really.

For gaming you want one of the following graphics cards:

3850, 9600GT, 3870, 9600GSO, 8800GS, 8800GT, 8800GTS 512mb, 8800GTX 768mb, 4850, 9800GTX, 9800GTX+.

2GB of ram and an Intel Core 2 processor are good to have too.

respectable for the price, you'd be looking at least double the cost for a modern gaming pc, like endlesswaves mentions 2GB+ RAM is a must these days, I'd recommend this (as a minumum) if you want to upgrade the graphics http://www.ebuyer.com/product/135098

depends what games he wants to play?

will also need to budget for an operating system, keyboard, mouse, monitor (add about another £150).
