What an absolutely stupid question. That has got to have started off being a joke and yet so many of the answers are serious.

Why is mongol offensive ?
#7
For many people the term "mongol" was used as an insult to mean "idiot" being that it is related to downs syndrome, it isn't appropriate to use.

"The term ( Downs Syndrome ) was first used by the editor of The Lancet in 1961. It was originally called mongolism or mongolian idiocy, after a perceived resemblance observed by Down between the faces of some of his patients with Down syndrome and the Mongoloid race. This usage is now viewed as both offensive and medically meaningless, though it is still very widespread in common speech (often used as an insult)."

Taken from here :

Glad you have not heard it used in this way!!

where do you thing "mong" comes from exactly?

: I have a friend who continually uses the word "mong" when refering to relaxing/chilling out etc.

: Does this word exist and if so what does it really mean?
:)

BEGIN SNIP
Mong Noun. Imbecile, idiot. Offensive expression alluding to someone with Down Syndrome, being Mongoloid. Derog.
Verb. To reach a drugged state where activity is on a low and mental faculties are incapacitated. Used frequently within the 'ecstasy' fuelled 'house' scene. Obvious relationship to the derogatory version of the noun 'mong'. [1990s]
mong-out Verb. Meaning the same as 'mong' (verb). E.g."Those pills were heavy, we all monged out."

I've tried to think up any positive reason for you tagging this thread as "mongol" and I can't think up any positive reason for using this term as a tag.

In what way did you mean "Mongol"? You know it's a racist term, right? As well as having insulting references to Downs Syndrome.

I'm very sorry to hear of your loss. I've lost many people I love also, and guided my children through it, too.

You do understand why the term "mongol" is racially and personally insulting to many people, don't you?

I don't think that protecting other's feelings is pathetic at all, do you?

maybe you should read up on what words actually mean before using them in a derogatory fashion which you clearly were in the tag.

I just dont see why you bought downs syndromes into it, If it had been a video of D-S sufferer then or something i see why - but i would NEVER do that.

You call someone a "mongol" meaning what exactly? You haven't stated your meaning.

You just emotionally sandblast the question which is fine, I understand from that you're distressed which is not what I'm trying to do, but in using a racist insulting term to be derogatory about someone else you create your own distressing behaviour.

It is never acceptable to demean or belittle someone else in whatever sense or words, if you're calling someone a "mongol", that's never going to be a positive statement.

And if you REALLY don't understand that... that's the way words develop... the word "mongol" is related to downs syndrome because of the associations I have already explained. I didn't relate the two words, the relationship already exists. It isn't right to call people such names love. If someone reading this is the parent of a downs syndrome sufferer don't you think that might have upset them?

don't go around calling names if you havent got the slightest clue what it means!

Still havent got any explanation of what kerri<3 thought it meant.

No..........Just to clarify I don't see how any one, especially someone who has experienced downs cannot find that term highly offensive........No wonder people with these kinds of disabilites are abused in the street, when people with close experiences don't even understand the that certain terms are derogatory.
Some one with close experience with any kind of learning disabiltiy would find that term higly offensive, so if Op's relative did have downs, it just shows ignorance more than anything. Sorry Kerry, but it does, a lot of my son's friends have downs, my son himself is often called a "mong", he is Autistic not downs, just goes to show, people don't know the meaning of half the words they spew out :)
I will leave this thread, just though I would put my 2p in..................

I was at an National Autistic Society event at the weekend hon for work and there's this woman who is doing brilliant work with autistic children who have pretty extreme needs. She has developed a way of communicating with children who have literally no level of communication with other people and zero understanding and desire for social contact or communication and I saw these children not only responding to her, but seeking her attention ( even if it was just with a turn of the head towards her )and actual pleasure in her company... it was really breathtaking.

Don't let anyone call your son names, it's basic cruelty and totally unacceptable x x

They do some really good work and have some amazing people on hand the AS.
I don't let name calling happen, I do pipe up. Somethings are said in innocence, some not so, luckily he cannot "understand" someone is being cruel, I can though and so can his brother, a lot of it is, dare I say bad parenting, as the kids follow the parents...........

The woman whose work I was watching filled me with a new sense of positivity really and gave me so much insight in that one morning than i've had from others in months. It's so good to see some really positive work being done around autism.

A friend of mine's son has aspergers so it helped me think how I could help him next time he felt sensory overload and it'll undoubtedly help me with work too.

Thank God for the NAS :)
