Make sure you have invested the maximum amount by 5th April 2010 if you can afford it.

To gain the most interest.

It does:-

As soon as the next tax year starts (i.e., 6 April) you can put a whole new year's allowance in - and from April 2010 this will be a bigger £5,100.

Well if you are over 50 (as I am) it has aleady rocketed (up from £3,600) so I have already put in £5,100 this year.

And plan to put another £5,100 in next year.

You only get interest on how long it's been in anyway? My ISA dropped from 5.5% last year to 0.5% this year so I moved a few thousand into premium bonds.

you could just have transfered it into another isa. i think my one is 3.5%

if you have cash you dont use over the year - then isa is a recommended choice. Im thinking of switching from barclays isa to abbey isa.

but your allowance is based on a tax year so a timely reminder.

premium bonds are useless for 99% of investors

Yeah but I like having everything with Halifax. Got 1 cardcash account, 2 current accounts, my isa and my credit card with them, nice and easy to manage from my online banking.

i take it you don't have more than £50k then. or you enjoy risk

The miserable rates being offered on most ISA's means they are hardly worth the bother.

£5000 I'm only a 20yr old student (that's my own money though not student loans).

lol How come you're down by £1k? I'm sure you put down £6k earlier.:-D

Hardly worth the bother compared with what?

If you have your money in any other account you pay tax on the interest. In an ISA you pay no tax on the interest.

I am sure some ISAs pay nearly 3% at the moment.

hmmm
im looking to start putting money away but dont really know where to start

it says it can be 10,200 a year but 5,100 of that is in cash, so how can u add the other 5,100 if that makes sense?

ok ive seen the other amount of the ISA would go in shares? Would it go into shares of the bank/building society you get the ISA with?

Not quite. With the Easter Weekend falling at the end of the financial year a lot of banks are putting the cut-off at 1 April and can't guarantee processing transactions they get any later.
