We spent a long weekend in Rome. You can walk between most attractions, except for the Vatican (it's a bit too far to walk to). There are tourist buses that do a circular route. If you wait at one of the bus stops there's usually reps offering good deals to go on their buses - we got two day passes for less than half price. And Rome is a safe place - we were not afraid to be tourists (looking at maps in the street, etc).

Rome - Quality city (walk everywhere & admire the buildings etc)
Milan - Dump apart from Duomo Square & Guiseppe Mezza
Venice - Beautiful
Turin - Dump
Rimini area - Beautiful (get a car & drive)

I agree. Particularly when taking a gondola down the smaller canals and seeing raw sewage thrown out of the windows you understand why!

I love Italy full stop, no matter where.
Lakes are super – Stresa, Sirmione, Varenna are all fab, but we like gardens and lake trips and old stuff so it rather depends what you are after. Skiing near Torino or past Como or up by Monte Campione is good. Milan is OK in the centre , fab for fashion and opera. Bergamo nearby is a treasure.Venice is a must see – we have only been in Autumn & Winter – it doesn’t smell then. Rome is to die for, plus trip to Tivoli and around. Napoli – only for someone who can get by in Italian – but ideal for Pompeii and Herculanum; most stay on the Amalfi coast – I haven’t been there. Sardinia – lovely clear seas and nice resorts for sun, sea and sand. Tuscany – farm houses to rent; Pisa, Siena, Florence, Letto – all gorgeous for the architecture and art plus beautiful countryside – get around by bus. Sicily – marvellous Greco-roman ruins. Taormina is great and it’s easy to get to Etna; Club Med type places on the SW, Palermo is ‘interesting’. Rimini area is nice off season. Quinque Terra has terrifying coastal roads and wonderful scenery. Along from Monte Carlo, San Remo & the Italian Riviera are fine; call in on Genova. And so on ….

I would check out the Tripadvisor forums for various places/itinerary ideas for a trip to Italy.

You say you are off next month- have you booked to go anywhere in particular?

There are SO many places I would recommend you go to, but it depends how long you are over there, and how much travelling around you want to do.

Obviously you could go to any of the places listed here, but to an extent it also depends a bit on what you are interested in and what you like to do. Chesso has lots of excellent ideas, which shows how much variation there is. If you want to see opera you might want to go to Milan, if you like Renaissance art then Florence, Siena, Urbino, Assisi are just a handful of potential places to go. Would you like to hire a car or travel around and visit vineyards? Or if you prefer an outdoor holiday you can go climbing in the Dolomites, for example. Give us some more info about what you would like to do. I am jealous as I am not going back to Italy until the summer :(
