The Geeky Gadgets website reports that the entry-level iPad, which has Wi-Fi and 16GB of flash memory, will cost £389. The 32GB version will cost £439, while the 64GB version will cost £489. The rumoured UK prices are significantly more expensive than Apple's US iPad prices there, the entry-level model costs $499 (£326), the 32GB version costs $599 (£392) and the 64GB model is $699 (£457).

So who's buying one? will the ipad be a hit or a miss?

Is that a joke, why would you buy it, it's so limited and poor. Netbook is like half the price and has so many more features/functions.

I knew a few people who will be buying one. A lot of people said similar things about the iPhone when it came out. I'm not so keen myself mind.
#3
Don't think so. I would rather spend half that money on a netbook like dcx says, and the rest on a acer media centre!
#4
With Apple products the first releases are usually lacking, I'd wait a bit.

Probably because I have every gadget going and Im a sucker! I said the same about the iphone and refused to buy one initially because of lack of features but when I did finally get one I really liked it! The apps are very cool!

P.S. I already have a netbook....

Same goes for most companies these days. Early adopters kind of accept it as a consequence of being at the bleeding edge!

Still can't see the point of it, but it's so cheap that I'll probably buy one when I go into an Apple store next.

I've never really seen the point of netbooks either though. Just horrible little laptops.

I think it's most useful application as far as I'd use it would be in home automation. Would make very nice flat panel touch screen wall control systems. Imagine one flush in the wall in each main room of your house to control everything from lighting to music. The home automation community seem to be pretty excited about it.

I wish i had money to throw about i shouldn't say throw but spend money on exspensive stuff

Not needed, never will be either, will just use the higher education store for a discount as every little helps:)

i'm getting one. shame if these prices are factual. really don't see the need for a big gb on it but at those prices i'd probably get the 32 or 64. in my head they seem the better value. all expensive but hey....any new apple product costs this. home automation would be awesome!

I like the idea of that!! Why didn't I think of that?! I kinda started with all that x10 stuff a while ago but never carried on with it...

Just think! you could replace the toilet flush handle with the iPad. But seriously One good remote control, and a varilight dimmer switch can do all that for less.

Well a good remote for home automation usually cost 150+ and it won't have all the functions the ipad will have, so it's not bad value in that sense...

its a laptop you can carry without it being the main thing you are carrying

carry around a 15 inch laptop at what 6 pounds, and its pretty huge

I use my netbook everyday at uni and walk there and back, wouldn't want to do that with a full size laptop.

Are you very weak or suffer from some disability?

18" monster laptop FTW. i had a netbook and while it is fun has massive limiting features for what i wanted it for.

I hated the ipad at first but if the internet is fast on it then i may take a closer look... otherwise i might wait for the courier or see what other windows/android based tablets come out. dell mini 5 looks the nuts too.

I want one and will probably get one,has anyone found any genuine piccies of it yet and specs there's too many fake mock ups knocking around

I meant fully working (should of said videos) I've got the iPhone so if it is just an oversize iPhone I will probably just get the ipad and get a normal phone

A.k.a iPhone/iPod Touch because if you type in on YouTube 'how to turn iPhone into ipad' r something like that It will show you how!

Well the only things i can think of that would need "remote" control would be TV, Satellite, Lights, AV system and if you're bed ridden, the curtains. I think it would be a bit big and extremely costly to keep switched on to use as MC has suggested, besides people could end suffering a stroke or "Brain Failure" when one conks out/crashes and all the crap that needs to be automated has to be re-configured.

One good remote control, Simples.

Don't get me wrong, I love gadgets as much as any tech freak out there. But this is one I will definitely be avoiding. It's just to limitedfor the kind of tweaking I like to be able to do.

MChief's idea is a bit OTT but with home automation the possibilities are endless! Witha remote, you won't be able to program the lights to follow you into rooms and make you a coffee when you walk through the front door!

I wont b buying one for one reason - I have no use for it

I'd rather wait until teleporter and replicator technology has been perfected. :p
Lights with motion detectors have been available for ages. I prefer Tea over Coffee, and have around 16 different varieties of Tea atm. I usually pick one at random or one to suit my mood. when I have a Coffee I always like to take it in different strengths to suit me. :)

Ooo! HP slate looks good!

HP looks very good on paper, Apple products semm to be like cul-de-sacs and leave too much to be desired as far as tweaking goes.
The iFad is just like an iPhone with a massive screen.

It's clear you just don't like the device and can't see any use for it yourself but you're being dismissive of why others would want it.

Judging by your dismissal of using it for home automation and your reasons why it would be no good for it I can safely say you have no idea of what home automation is and how popular it is in the States and growing here. Portable remotes are where you start with home automation. Touch screen wall panels are what you ultimately aim to have.

As I mentioned before there are many people I know who will be buying one, I won't be as I can't find a purpose for it yet but that doesn't mean because I don't want one it is no good.

This, this, this! Well said.

When the iPod launched years ago, people slated it and it wasn't generally well received. Look where that went....

Same went with the iPhone. I remember there being a huge backlash against it when it was announced. The forums were full of whiny Apple haters going on about old technology, lack of this and that, locked down, the N95 is better etc etc. Now look at it, despite the fact it is consistently the most expensive phone in the mainstream, its popularity knows no end it seems.

I don't think the iPad will be as successful as the iPhone but I bet it sells a lot more units than some of its netbook competitors!

This is a great idea! Although surely one of it's major plus points is that it is portable? I struggled to see why anyone would want one at first but I can see that it could have some really great uses now!
