Ive just bought a car. What now?

So I put a deposit down on a car on saturday, ive gotta pick it up tommorow afternoon but heres a few problems.

The car has no tax so i need to get that sorted. Problem is ive signed up to my insurance today to find that there is no way to print off my certificate online or anything so no way for me to get my tax in time?

Also, what do i do with the V5C ? Ive signed it and put my details on it and the previous owner signed the declaration, what do i do with the form now?

Sorry i'm a bit clueless when it comes to this paper work.

Ask the insurance co to rush the cert it will arrive tomorrow, tax the car with the green part of the log book as soon as you buy, drive straight to your nearest late post office in a supermarket (Waitrose, Tesco etc). Even if stopped you would be able to prove that you have just purchased and will have docs for taxing.

most garages will provide 7 days free insurance with a used car that will allow you to tax it

you should get the little tear off bit from the logbook, the previous owner should then send off the rest of the logbook and you should get a new one in a few weeks.

im pretty sure you can apply online for your tax, this way you don't need your certificate they can just check whether your insurered or not.

yeah 7 day driveaway provided by norwich union. they give you 7 days cover for free when you get a quote, the cover sheet is then emailed/faxed to the dealer, I'm sure if you mention it to the dealer, he'll give you a flyer with his dealer reference on it.

i got told before when we had the same problem by the post office that they will not take faxed copies of insurance documents, so we had to park off road until it came so we could tax :-(
it would be easier for you if you got the dealer to tax it for you before you pick up & pay him the money :)

Get the dealer to deliver it on trade plates to your home, keep it off road until it is sorted.

A couple of years ago I bought a car on Ebay which gives you (well did then if not now) seven days free insurance. Even though car tax is supposed to be able to be done by electronic means there was no way the PO would accept the printed documents. Complete PITA it was. There was no way I was driving home without tax and no way I was coming back later - 200 mile round trip. So in the end we transfered the registered keeper to the guy who had dealer insurance and taxed it that way. We weren't very happy because the registration documents then showed an extra keeper and he wasn't very happy because I guess he wanted to keep the transaction cash and out of his business. Typical lousy British bureaucracy, aids the guilty and hinders the innocent.
