True, its a shame another classic song and amazing performance will be lost to the "thats the xfactor song" disease :x

too many jeff buckley posts going around, makes me think his recording company is desperate now ...

of course jeff buckley is a different league. the x factor is a show. we know it is a show. whatever song they do there is going to be a cover. just because they HAVE to do a cover doesnt mean they're not a young upcoming star. or superstar. just give it a rest folks. people are still going to buy the christmas number one whether or not it is a masterpiece because they feel they relate to that person. so ... whether or not the xfactor winners do last longer than a year, only time will tell.

you can either embrace modern interpretations or not. some records live and records die. it's as easy as that, so dont do such a hard sell it kinda takes the shine off jeff buckley. i love him so please try not to have him roll in his grave ... lol. the sad thing is he's dead so you could say yes he was great and live in that great memory of performing a song that wasn't his originally ... sorta similar scenario. i hope someone will do a better version eventually coz this is how music is meant to evolve to be better.

Let's face it the X factor wnner is never going to be that popular to some, long term she will be a big hit I think.

Personally I thought her cover tonight was brilliant but those fans of the original versions of this are never going to think it's as good are they?

also forgot to mention JLS and alex are 20 year old or younger. no disrespect but how can you expect these youngsters to know about heartfelt pain and suffering in the soul at that age, disappointments maybe ... Buckley was almost 28 when the Grace album came out.

Besides being on the music top list of great songs ... "Buckley's first #1 came posthumously in March 2008 when "Hallelujah" topped Billboard's Hot Digital Songs following a performance of the song by Jason Castro on American Idol."

Love Cohen, although I am only allowed to listen to him on my own. Took great delight telling all the family who wrote the X Factor winning song though :p

Would love to see him live

I prefer the Buckley version- I really like Alexandra but I actually can't stand how she sang it (And I don't think that's to do with me being a fan of the original because I loved JLS's interpretation). I just think it's such a gentle passionate song but she has such a powerful voice it overdid it, for me anyway!

Why does everyone keep describing the x factor song as THE number 1. You not seen the campaigns to stop it getting to number 1. GMTV is a joke this morning i'm turning over. Btw i'm at work not a lay about benefit seeker.

"The cover bonanza should ease his financial pain a little, bringing royalties of at least £250,000 his way.

Hallelujah has already been reinterpreted by everyone from John Cale - whose take many purists judge to be the finest - to Rufus Wainwright, whose version graced the Shrek soundtrack.

A spokesman for Sony BMG, which counts Cohen, Buckley and Burke among its artists, said the company hoped Burke would take the top spot, but conceded: "Obviously it would be brilliant if Jeff got to No 2."

Bought both Buckley and Cohen version, much prefer to the Alex version
