Ok i applied for a job a few weeks ago and have just got an email back with these questions. Whilst most of them i understand some of them i do not.
This is for an admin job in an aquatics place hence some of the questions and part of the job is maintaining the website.

The questions I am not sure about I will put a start by them!

**1. Do you know anything at all about tropical/coldwater fish and ponds?

2. Do you have any holiday plans and if so could you tell us more about them?

**3. 60163 ? ( WHAT THE HELL IS THIS ABOUT???!!)

4. Are you allergic to cats?

5. Tell us why you think you can handle this job with its myriad of challenges

6. Tell us about your family and how your job will fit in with family life

***7. Provide a short sentence in bold plum coloured text in HTML 4 code
WHILST I DID A SMALL BIT OF HTML IN COLLEGE IM UNSURE OF IT BUT WOULD IT BE SOMETHING LIKE THIS hello AS FOR THE PLUM CODE I AM UNSURE DOES ANYONE KNOW?

8. Can you give us an indication of your typing speed? (i.e. one finger, two fingers, two hands etc)

***9. Have a look at http://www.aquatics-online.co.uk/catalogue/blagdon-mini-pond-pumps.asp and tell us what you would do to improve the website in this area to get more sales
WHAT WOULD YOU DO TO IMPROVE IT?

**10. Based on the water in a 1000 gallon (4500 litre) pond having to be turned over once every two hours (with no waterfall or fountain) and using the information on our website, please identify which pond pumps you think would be suitable.

i really need a swift response because i need to get this back this afternoon.

Thanks!

For the plum code, you would use for bold, and either find a hex code for the plum colour, or I assume html has a plum feature so might suffice. (Can't remember, been about a year since I had to do html). Make a test page and try it.

*edit* TEST SENTANCE HERE

For web help, use w3c: http://www.w3schools.com/tags/tag_FONT.asp

But I'd also advise that you're best to have all formatting saved in a CSS file and link it that way :)

Part of the job criteria was maintaining a website, it didnt say how but i assumed some kind of training would be given.

60163 is a steam locomotive - The Tornado. Is it something to do with a plastic steam train aquatic, decorative feature that could be at the bottom of one of the aquariums, for the fish to swim around and admire?
#4
all i could find out about what 60163 might be is, a 60163 is a steam engined train??? sorry for not being very usefull
#5
thats exactly what i found about that number as well!!
#6
my advise, dont fill in what you dont know, they want someone to obviously train up, and mould how they want, if you know all the answers, they probably won't bother to hire as you're be too good for the job, same the other way, not enough and won't consider you.

Just answer what you know, and put that your willing to learn everything as it's a new sector. Be honest, best way forward.
#7
also im assuming that number is a product code... only thing it really could be as it wouldnt be on any accounting system, (sage, iris)
#8
I have worked out the code for the html, but I have also added that I do not have any real knowledge in HTML and with the correct training i could be very efficient.
#9
it could be a product code but there is no way of searching
#10
there is a search bar at the top of the page and the number returns no products.

Hey there - you're not going to like this advice, but it sounds like this job might be a bit much of a stretch for you. You're applying for a job in aquatics working on the website and you don't know much about aquatics or HTML. Perhaps you'd be better off using your time to send out new applications for jobs more suited for your skillset? As someone who has hired hundreds of people over the last 10 years, I can tell you that you're not making the best use of your time or theirs by going to an interview that you're not well-suited for. Just my £0.02 - don't shoot the messenger :)

so you dont know *1. Do you know anything at all about tropical/coldwater fish and ponds?

i really hope they dont read this thread
#13
ceefa, i understand what you are saying but the job title is general administrator and the job description just said maintaining the website.
I have explained that I have very little knowledge about html but with the right training and guidance I can grow into the job. I also feel that a knowledge of aquatics is not essential given that I am only carrying out admin tasks.

nope I dont but the job is for a general administrator so i dont think a knowledge is needed, it certainly didnt state this in the job description.

Also whats wrong with learning?
#15
he other thing is, i have been looking for work since january and this is the closes I have come to having my second interview!!

Surely I have got to go for it??!!!

nothing is wrong with learning, what i am referring to is, if you dont know how to answer that question then you need more than learning - lol

The questions I am not sure about I will put a start by them!

I know how to answer the question, the simple fact is, i have no knowledge about them but maybe someone else would have a better way of getting around it.
as it happens this is my answer for it.

Unfortunately I do not know anything about tropical/coldwater fish and ponds. I do have an interest in fish in general as I am keen fisherman but I have no knowledge of tropical/coldwater fish and ponds. I do however feel that a lack of knowledege in this field will, in no way, affect my ability to do the job. I would also have no problem in learning more about this as I progressed.
#18
well i have answered most of it but the pond pump question is getting me.

would it be better getting a pump that pumps over 4500 litres and hour so that the 4500 litres would get turned over twice in 2 hours or should i buy a pump that turns over half of the 4500 litres an hour so that the whole 4500 litres would be turned over once in 2 hours?

If that makes sense?!

correct,
but the actual answer is

"The pump which makes the company the most profit" ;-)

maybe saying,

you keep saying you know nothing, not a good start, look for the positives not the negatives

Perhaps, but if you've little knowledge of HTML, don't be afraid to admit it, but don't put yourself down either and make it as positive as possible. HTML isn't difficult to learn (basics anyway) and you'll be coding in no time.

Good luck with the form. I've been helping my gf fill in quite a few admin forms lately, and my head is melted.
#22
thanks sass

Dragon what i did say was that I did a little bit of html in college and do remember how to write a sentence in bold and in colour, but my knowledge is limited. i did say however that with the right training i could become quite efficient in html

honestly the length of some of these forms is ridiculous. I mean 12 pages for an admin job!
#24
that 60163 is bugging me but I have explained that I do not understand the question.
#25
oh well i have been as honest as i can and explained everything so i think it is ready to send back!
#26
email has been sent!!

fingers crossed they can see how honest and open I have been!
#27
thanks for all your help guys!

Paul take note: You're job as Admin as skill less, it's not a management position at all
#32
what do you mean by that?
#33
brettytopbanana
what do you mean by that?

Exactly what it says. Administrator is a skilled job, they will expect some background in the area you are applying. While you won't need to know the ins and outs of their specific operation they will expect you to have done a similar job for another company. It's a bit like Alan Sugar turning over his job to a trainee really:thumbsup:
#34
what i was trying to get at was that the job description did not ask for any kind of skills in web developing or any sort of software just that the website had to be maintained and there are several ways of doing that hence why i thought no knowledge would be needed.
