Depends on the field. In my line (banking, asset manaegement) apart from a couple you can only apply through agencies.

Graduates obviously apply direct though.

I've had little luck with either so far, but the little luck I have had has been with an agency

Agency wins..just

lol.....what would work be like if you couldnt get on to HUKD

I can only do short term contracts cause i get bored tooo easily in any job....now i am seriously contemplating a career change!!!!!

if you are after any job agency as they will get you something normally quite quick etc

but agencies normally pay quite low rates well thats what i have although i must say working for an agency can lead to a perm/contract with the employer direct

Direct application could mean jobs advertised on the companies website too.

As you said .. "cold applications" mostly get frowned upon.

I'd go for both, agency there is more chance to haggle salary (dip into their cut).

Contract work > agency
permenant > direct applications

Be careful with agencies.. some just take your cv, sit on it and revisit 6 months later.
Plus.. they "try" to sell you training.

Good luck!
