John Lewis pricematch!!!

Well, i'm a bit confused!!

I have asked John Lewis in Manchester to pricematch a Sony 40" lcd with the same model in Empiredirect. There is a £300 difference which is mega!

I'm sure I read on this site somewhere that when you ring, they call you back within an hour or two to tell you whether they will match another shops price.

Well, I rang on Monday to be told I would have to wait 48 hours for a response which I was a bit disappointed with. I rang today to find out what was happening and was told the decision takes 5 working days!!! I'm gutted.

I know they have to check if the product is actually in stock at the other competitor's store but surely a phone call is all it takes?????

When I asked for a pricematch via email they sent me a letter which they told me to take to the store as my proof. Took about a week I think.

They are always like this to be honest - and Im not sure why trading standards let them get away with using the slogan "never knowingly undersold" - 'cos its a blatant lie!

Why don't you just buy the TV from Empiredirect if it's so much cheaper?

3 words.

"Five year warranty."

You get a 5 year guarantee free with John Lewis. You only get 3 years with Empiredirect. Makes a big difference.

If John Lewis offer a 5 year warranty and Empiredirect offer a 3 year warranty, surely the offers are not comparable and John Lewis have no need to price match? It would seem fairly obvious that a TV with a 5 year warranty is not the same as a TV with a three year warranty. Is that the answer or are John Lewis stupid enough to price match in these circumstances?

If you really want the tv that much quicker, then get it from Empire Direct. If you're wanting to take advantage of their 5 year guarantee, then accept that you may have to wait a week or so - depends how important the extra warranty is to you?

I got mine last year from JLs after pricematching with one of the Bradford Empire Direct stores - was pretty quick and easily done online, just bear in mind they do say they have to goto the shop you're pricematching against, and see on display with the ticketed price you've quoted.

I'm surprised that JL bother with the pricematching and 5 year guarantees any more, the amount of hassle they get for it is amazing - it's not like you see Comet, Currys or even Empire Direct giving away 5 year free guarantees and price matching too!

I have spoken to the 'Partners' at Nottingham several times on this matter. They should be able to offer instant price match with Empire Direct as they normally have there Empire price list available. They did this on a recent Sony LCD I got. Try and get the person answering the phone to look into it , mention them having the Empire price list rather than pass to undersales, as they often get out of it if its not ticketed in the local store and on display. Dont forget if it goes down again soon at Empire you will get another refund of the difference.

Is all the pricematching a instore thing as the nearest John lewis is about 20miles away and dont fancy running there and back all time why the decide if they will match it and then when etc: if possible id just send a email and post a link from nearby place that has a Sony tv im after thats £300 cheaper than they stock it at then i would just pay with credit card if they would do that over the net or phone

John Lewis have a criteria that needs to be followed before they are able to offer you the same price as the competitor which will mean they have to visit the store and see the same item on sale with the price for the item displayed.

I have managed to get a Price Match with a Sony 40" LCD TV although I know other people haven't been able to recently as it now 'Specially Ordered For You' and not an item in stock so they will dismiss that straight away!

I think 5 days is worth the wait to save £300 and the customer service they offer if things do go wrong are much better than Empire Direct from what I've heard...

John Lewis offer free delivery.

Some comments really surprise me! Of course i'm willing to accept I can wait a week or so. If you read the original post, I said someone on this site had a response in an hour or so. I didn't say I was angry, just disappointed. As for the warrante, surely you would go with someone that gives you two years extra cover for FREE!!

Thanks for your post dealtaker, it was most helpful.

There are othe conditions for the price match to be successful. I've been told they will send someone to visit the store and the tv must be on display and they will only match the price on display. The Internet prices of Empire Direct are usually cheaper but John Lewis will only match the store prices.....

If the tv is not in stock or not on display in Empire Direct then they won't price match.

You're best bet is to keep an eye on the pricematch thread on the AV Forums. I can post a link if you haven't already seen it.

Congrats on ur price match. When i wanted to buy a plasma from JL a few weeks ago, i tried to get them to price match. Their criteria was that it must not be an online deal, it must be the same product (obviously), they must have them in stock and that they must have a brick and mortor warehouse/shop where you can pick it up from. The told me it could take a few days over the phone but i told them i needed for it to be confirmed that same day. The lady said she will address my price match details as urgent. I got a call that afternoon. So they were quick. But they didnt price match. I asked the lady on the phone why not and she didnt have an answer, she just said ' i dont know but its not been accepted, i just needed to let you know'. Oh well.
