Question:-

Whats the policy re: jokes in misc? There were several a few months ago about maddy mcann and shannon mathews that were allowed to run - yet one today about the austrian family seems to have been pulled due to a few people throwing toys around.

Is it down to the opinion of the moderators or how many complaints you get? And do the same rules apply to products that people find offensive for example a copy of Extras (ricky gervais) contains various innuendo's about disabled people - Or GTAIV allows you to get various sexual services in graphical form from hookers?

I'm not overly bothered either way but I want to highlight the point that there should be some guidlines otherwise jobsworths can simply complain if they find something offensive and have it removed. People will find some things offensive, others may not but I think we should not bow down to a minority where items/threads are removed just because one or two people dont like it.

Jokes are jokes.
Cant always please everyone.
I found the joke in question pretty funny. I didnt see it as being cruel / racist / hatred so i posted it.
Although i found it more amusing that people thought she really was bringing out a book so early lol

lol... nice one

Ah right, with the amount of moaning going on I presumed it had been removed.

i am as entitled to my opnion as you seem to think you are, i fond the post offensive, rude and to be perfectly honest pretty sick, again my opinion, it seems you are now the one moaning no-one else:roll:

Whoa calm down there, no need to get all defensive my comment was not aimed at anyone in particular. I'm looking for discussion about the points I made above where possible.
[admin]#7
I pulled it Ritchie, based on the numerous reports I'd received

their isnt any rule about jokes, maybe common sense is all that is needed on this one

I also found the post offensive. And btw, "a few people throwing toys around" isn't exactly conducive to a constructive debate, if that's really what you are after with this post...?
#10
Thanks for replying JB, in that case if say a deal that was posted and I found it disagreeable (in my opinion) or if it was not to my taste would it be removed, or would it be removed if say a certain amount of reports were put in?

My point is that Jokes are subjective, comedy is subjective, deals are subjective to personal opinion.

I used it as an acronym to describe what had gone on in the thread in a quick manner - I think it describes it fairly well.
#12
fuuny or not, is it
a) hot?
b) uk-based?
c) a deal?

Having thought about what I put in pre-edit I came to the conclusion that it was not what I wanted to say.

A community defines its own boundaries as to what is and what is not acceptable. Does the definition of subjectivity that (I think) you are hinting at, mean that we should tolerate things that receive an unusally large number of complaints?

What he said ^^

It was a pretty sick joke to be honest, especially given the timeframe... totally uncomparable to someones' opinion on a deal.

No, it doesn't describe it very well. Neither is it an acronym (you might want to look that word up). Furthermore, your later posting of 'Cellar vie' shows that you remain insensitive to the real issue here.

In your opinions it was sick

how many complained?
how many read, but didn't complained? not everyone has to comment on it

Sorry, but you have to be able to laugh at everything in life or you'll never get out of life alive!

Might not be too everyones taste, but then again, what is?!
#20
Depends on the community, clearly the Mcann and Mathews jokes could be seen to be on a similar level however they were not pulled or were not pulled for a considerable amount of time. Maybe they did not recieve as many complaints or perhaps in the communities opinion they were funny?

My point is that it was a joke, like the OP said some people found it funny, some did not but at what point does the mod determine that it's not in the interests of the community to have a joke like that on the forum? And do the same rules apply to deals in the case of say entertainment DVD's which may offend a minority of people?
#21
My comment 'Cellar Vie' was a joke, and should be viewed as such.

Reaction to that comment is partly the issue here eg. over-rection to a joke.

You are going to go round in circles. Not so long ago you were beginning to make the claim that everyone is entitled to their opinions, yet now you are trying to tell others how to interpret your words. What's really at stake here is an understanding of language and its effects. It would be very simple (and convenient) if damaging discourses could just be labelled jokes as if that's makes everything ok. You would need to be pretty naive to think that a real discussion could end with that. And you did want a discussion, didn't you..?

EDIT: sorry, you added this part later. I didn't ignore it

This isn't a very strong argument either. The 'over-reaction' ploy is another common argumentative strategy. It makes me believe you are not thinking very hard about this if you need to rely on such cliched anwers.

Well i guess i should say sorry for finding something funny..in the future i will keep them to myself.
Sorry for any offence caused

Of course everyone is entitled to their opinion, my point is if the system in place is that the number of complaints (eg. differences of opinion) determines when the thread is pulled then firstly how many complaints result in the post being removed. And secondly if the system is community moderation, what system is in place to protect the views of those who actually like the joke.

Yes opinions differ but it seems to me that when someone, or a group of people dislike what is essentially a joke which is subjective why should the system be tilted in favour of those who complain - how many people liked that joke? How many people liked the Mcann/mathews joke?

I'm not defending the subject matter of the joke, of course it was a terrible situation.
#25
HUKD has to be careful of what it does allow to be published, incest and rape are an extremely sensitive issue and in the "sue everybody" society we live in maybe HUKD felt this one a step too far.

if you can find humour out of horrific things like this there is no real point in this thread, you are clearly a sandwich short of a picnic

You are still not thinking this through, and what you have said to date is riddled with contradictions. Read your last line again, and think about what has been said so far.
#28
Sassie, in that case I suggest you stop watching anything by Ricky Gervais, Eddie Murphy and to be honest most other major comedians.

It was a terrible situation I agree but like many other people I find humour out of these things - just like the hundreds of people who replied to the Matthews/Mcann jokes on HUKD (which by the way you should report) and many other sites.

ritchie i do not watch any of the above to start with, i do have a sense of humour and do find things funnt, but i dont find the things you where saying funny, and i really do hope that none of your family ever have to suffer the way others have, especially with the fact how much support they would get from you whilst you taking the pee extracted from their misery
#31
And there was I, thinking that this thread might be a laugh! I'll not click next time!!!

Not wanting to get involved but do you remember thay Billy Connoly did a joke about Ken Bigley encouraging his capters to kill him, then they did?

I found the joke funny, I did not post the joke - the only comment I made on it was 'cellar vie' which obviously was not funny.

It was a joke, do I intend on causing the family concerned harm? no, would I wish the same treatment on my family? of course no? Do I intend harm on disabled people? no! Did I laugh when Ricky Gervais took the pee out of disabled people? Yes I did and so did the other 4000 people watching.

oh i see, you have now narrowed it down to one joke, and thats ok because you didnt post it
#34
So I'm guilty by assosiation because I found the joke funny? I would have had no qualms about posting it either.
#35
Maybe people do find these things funny. Even if it's something we wouldn't say ourselves, maybe we still find it quite amusing. And maybe, when the comedians say it, it is funny.

But there's a time and a place for close-to-the-edge humor, and that's probably not the innocent little Misc section of a deal-finding website.

Obviously, just my opinion... but as sassie did say, common sense should probably prevail here.

You are getting there. Well done for sticking with this thread and for bringing the issue around to what really matters (i.e. what is more important that making someone laugh) I know many others might have become abusive when confronted on their opinions so strongly.

I will bow out now - rep left for the various members brave enough to stand up for their convictions in a positive manner.

if your going to go into victim mode i really cant be bothered, this was never about a discussion, this was about you being peed off that a thread got pulled, im glad it got pulled, im glad i reported it, you only have to see your snide remarks in your early posts to know exactly what you wanted to happen here, sadly no-one jumped on your bandwagon, and now i have to go pick my little one up from school

Thanks, I have tried to remain as un-agressive as possible - and although my original question seems to remain un-answered I have enjoyed discussing this with you and have at least learned that an Acronym is not what I thought it was

If any of my comments have come across as 'snidey' then that was not my intention, personally I find you very agressive in the way you communicate with people hopefully that is not your intention.

This has been a great thread about the power of language, right up to this post of yours. I'm really hoping sassie comes back with a constructive comment that let's us all leave happy. :)

Hope everyone agrees we've all learned something here about ourselves. I have, and I'm always glad to participate in a discussion that does this. Nice one!
