So what does this mean for the likes of me? That Sony know everything about me that youtube knows? That is next to nothing really. Or is there a bigger picture in that this legal action will have an effect on people like me? I am not clear as to the significance of the case.

Sony only want the IP addresses to prove that a significant number of Californians accessed the vids / downloaded from geohots site etc so they can keep the case against him in Cali rather than NJ where he did the hacking. There's no implication for the users.

Seems odd that really, surely the locations would be spread out proportionally anyway.

Sony are trying to get the court hearing in their preferred US State so are attempting to prove that more people are affected by the decision in that State.

If you visited Geohot.com (for "research purposes") &/or downloaded the ZIP file or viewed any other information hosted there prior to the court proceedings it was not illegal to download these at the time. You cannot retrospectively apply laws in that manner & expect to prosecute.

Sony will, however, be able to ask Internet Service Providers where the I.P. addresses are registered to release the details of the users & if these are provided the users would be advised to remove all copies of the files in their possession.

There may well be some cross-referencing between I.P. addresses used to download the ZIP file from Geohot.com & the same connection to PlayStation Network.

If you are using (the latest) official Sony System Software on your PS3 console(s) then I doubt you have anything to worry about.

Sony want the case tried in court in San Francisco rather than in New Jersey (where Geohot lives) so they need to provide proof that a significant number of people who downloaded from his site & viewed the vids are in Northern Cali.

I got that. I meant the list of IPs by location aren't going to show a significant amount of California addresses than another state/country.

I don't think they need to be a majority or anything, Sony just need to show that there's lots of Californian's on the list so it can be tried in the court they favour in SF.

Savegame hacking doesn't require a hacked PS3. Infact, it's a totally, totally different issue that has no relevance to Sony obtaining IPs. Bad on Sony for infringing on peoples privacy!

Sony aren't getting the IP's & locations to go on a personal vendetta against everyone who watched the vid or d/l'd from geohot.com. They just need the info so the courts can say yay or nay to having the case in SF.
