Jury Duty

So my girlfriend has been called up for jury duty at the high court the day she is due to start college. She emailed them asking to be excused or have it put off until a date in the summer (reasonable i think since high court cases could run on for weeks on end), but they have just replied saying that she wont be excused.

Anybody got any ideas what she can do next?

thats is so bad, like others have said there isnt alot she can do, but bad to think her education can be messed about for this, i would contact her local mp and see if there is anything that can be done about this, not just for her but others who are in the same postition

My Dads done 'jury service' twice and there pretty strict with there rules and you can only get excused on medical grounds with a note from doctor i think !

Come across as a radical when you go for first day. Use your imagination in what you wear and say and you'll be off in no time.

Just tell her not to turn up. They have loads of college courses inside apparently and she will then have plenty of time to study!!
#13
Why not just do the logical thing and contact the college.

Just say you are mates with the defendant

Does not sound like she has got any 'resons to be cheerful'.

Surely the college cannot do anything? She will have to catch up

find a delorean running on a flux capacitor and stop her voting.

Do colleges have fresher's week like universities? Is she actually starting her course that week or just registering?
#19
has to go - but the college should most definately excuse it because there's nothing that she can do to get out of it. College are being akward explain the situation to the "Jury people" and they should sort that out.

Don't think she can get out of it unless she had a really good excuse, some people say they have holidays booked and they get excused, that's what my mum did. I wasn't that lucky, I had to do Jury service for 3 months, I got put onto a murder and attempted murder case but it was a great experience for me.

Watching too much American TV:)... they take anybody but those "known to the defendant or witnesses"
they give you a chance to say why you can't do your duty on the first day. is she a Nurse or a teacher [in training]? someone got let off because they had accountancy exams when i had JD.
Tell the college too. they might/will hold open a p[lace if you let them know... they wont if you don't...

Did you say she asked them to move it? Asking for jury duty to be deferred is not the same as asking to be excused - I think they just move it to another date in a year or so time. But you can only get it deferred once, not indefinitely.

my dad got out easy

i just filled in the form saying he works full time and only day off is tuesdays are u gonna compensate for his loss of earnings? (he is self employed)

they sent a letter back saying he is excused lmfao

I got excused by stating I was employed within a small family business and I was a key employee

Me too except mine was a large company.

I personally would hate to do jury service.
#26
i wish they'd call me up for dury duty too..i'd be first in the queue.
#27
I thought you were entitled to an automatic 6 month deferment - unless you have already differed once.

Write them a letter saying you're one of those people who has no trust in the police or the British justice system and so you don't feel you could be unbiased. Seriously, this has worked for people in the past.
#31
get your girlfriend to tell them its her time of the month. This is the standard get out clause used by women in most situations :p lol
#32
Simply return the letter with Guilty written on it.

yeah she asked for it to be deferred and they refused.

system is stupid, full time students should be exempt from this
