Funny what a kids water slide can do to you. Came down the hotel slide last Monday and 3 kids where at the bottom where you shoot out. Tried to avoid hitting them so turned to my side. Must have hit them the wrong way and at that stage fractured 3 of my ribs. Felt a bit wierd and short of breath but didnt think anything of it. Over the next few days i felt a bit stiff at night but again didnt realise what i had done. Then 4 days after i was at the bar with my friends, just tucking into my 2nd beer when.... i sneezed ! Bang, i felt my back pop and then blacked out. Got carried out of the hotel in a bar chair by 8 guys, great site for the onlookers lol, and then rushed to hospital and spent the last 4 days of my 2 week holiday in there. Just got back and feeling pretty rough... first bone ive ever broke in my 39 years on this planet !

So feeling down, in lots of pain, and need cheering up :-(

A fracture is a posh name for a 'break'.....

O gosh - poor you. Stilll on the bright side you'll be having an extended holiday; I am thinking that you cannot go back to work like that. Plus you have gained a ton of 'manliness points' for keeping going with that rib damage.
Get well soon.

and why were you sliding down a kids slide? 3 kids were at the bottom of the kids slide, shocker

open fracture/closed fracture. It's the same.

The hotel slides were not manned by a lifeguard, to which we complained about within the first 2 days. You couldnt see the bottom of the slide when stood at the top. Kids were just swimming right up to the opening all the time.. a shocker really. Anyway i took a hit for the kids... just grateful no little ones were hurt as it could of been so much worse.

PS like said a fracture is where the bone is cracked so to speak. in my case hanging on by a thread. A break is fully apart... so when i sneezed the thing must have just snapped.

Bloody painful !

Why did you slide down it then if you knew of the dangers beforehand?

ok but this was a "kids slide" as you mentioned, so you only went down the kids slide because no one was watching you? obviously not a nice thing to happen because it probably ruined your holiday but it was your own fault if the above is true

I say kids slide, but it was for everyone tbh... quite a big slide. All the parents where going down it and having fun... its just that the hotel need to provide a safety guy. The 'real' kids slide was tiny... but this slide was intended for all.

Shame about the damage, good news is that you seem to have been treated well and seem on the road to recovery.
Does it hurt when you laugh?

It hurts when i laugh, cough, dont even go there with sneezing lol as ive been holding my nose ever since !!

The word 'break' is never used in orthopedics, it is always fracture

A fracture when the bone is no longer connected or touching (sometimes resulting in the bone breaking the skin) is called a compound fracture.
#15
hardly hear break anymore....its all fracture...hence ppl go to FRACTURE CLINIC....there is no BROKEN BONES CLINIC!

:(

I hope the kids were demolished!

lol - sorry OP hope you're on the mend but it reminds me of a holiday we had in Majorca when my OH slipped walking across the kids pool while taking a shortcut. He sat there for ages and we were just laughing and carrying on drinking (as you do) until we realised he had this pained look on his face. He'd broken his arm in 3 places and had to go to hospital. Appeared 4 hours later with a stookie on and a pile of painkillers. They weren't going to allow him to fly home either but did thank god. Plus he had to drive all the way from Newcastle Airport to Edinburgh when we landed as I can't drive. Needless to say he bought me some driving lessons X)

Broke a rib jumping off a small kicker at MK snowdome...was a bummer.

Told my doctor and he said "probably broken, nought we can do about it"

Were you insured? Guessing the hospital bill was quite high.
#24

Learnt that from 2 years ago in Turkey when both little uns got ear infections.

When I was around 15 our whole class went on a trip to barcelona. Whilst in a waterpark we decided that it was a good idea for 8 of us to go down a "one at a time" slide at the same time. As we were going down I could see the wreckage that was forming at the bottom, as i was the last one, therefore had the chance to injure myself so that I don't injure others. However, I chose to sacrifice those before me, as it was their stupid idea. All went home with injuries, whilst I boarded the plane home unhurt.

Morale of the story, next time, crush the kids. They know full well that they shouldn't hang around at the bottom of a slide. :)
