Do they? Damn I must have a **** phone then:x
#3
they don't, but then most people get their answer machine calls free??

i dont think they do have built in answer machines. they certainly all have and answering machine service (provided by the operators network), but thats different isnt it?

yeah, so they can get more money out of you that way.

Yeah that's what I mean. I just dialled 901 (O2) and got charged 10p to be told i've got no messages. What a complete rip. How hard would it be to store incoming messages on a mobile these days???!!?

So they charge the caller for leaving the message and then have the cheek to charge you to pick it up :x

not really for those on a contract. If my phone picked up and recorded a call, it would cost the same as if the 'answering service' picked up a call and recorded it. One phonecall cost to the caller. Most people get the call for free to their answering service.

They wouldn't work if your battery went flat or when it was turned off (i.e. on an airplane or other places you can't use a mobile such as a hospital)

Si ti would be pretty useless as it wouldn't be a 24/7 answering machine service

They don't have a built in answering machine. You just get an answering service, which you usually have to pay for. BTW. You can contact your phone company and ask to have the answering service switched off (if you are mean like me). When anyone rings you the phone will keep on ringing until they disconnect. I had too many idiots (the unknown variety) that left messages, therefore I had mine turned off).

'voicemail' services are provided by most network operators and they work by your phone redirecting a call to another number (the voicemail center) after a certain number of rings, or if your phones turned off which the network must detect automatically. I guess the problem with built in answering machines was, historically, how to store the recorded message (edit - and if the phone was off it wouldn't work, didn't think of that one! doh!). I would think doing it via the network allows them to offer you options like a direct call back to the person who left a message.

If your phone doesn't redirect to a voicemail service it might be worth getting in touch with your network operator since I'm fairly sure they all provide the service if your phone is set up properly

Surely your not on PAYG???

I suppose the only benefit in having a built in answering machine is if your stuck on a desert islandwith no signal and with some bitch who set fire to the rum and the only thing that calms you down is the sound of your shipmate saying I will call you back!

But then you could have answer on X rings with voicemail as a fallback if you so chose. As it is I have NO answering machine whether my phones on or not as i'm ******ed if i'm lining their pockets......

I'm on a contract, mine comes out my free minutes, same as many. Others still charge.

You can't expect to get a top notch service for £3.33 per month, surely?

I didn't think he was complaining about the service as such. Just thinking that with everything a phone can do today, why not have an answer machine?

Exactly. But if they did it would kill a nice little cash cow.

A prime example of how the swear filter can make something appear worse than it actually is. I tried to correct it once and got a PM from Rayman for trying to circumvent it.

So you're trying to say you had the word 'flabbergasted' in there originally then?
