Just had my bicycle stolen

Three hours in uni and then come out to find out some ******* has stolen my bike. However this isnt going to deter me from riding, I think Ill use two D locks in the future. The bike was stolen in broad daylight in a busy area, my bike was secured with a 4 digit combination lock, looks like it wasn't secure enough. I only had the bike a few weeks and did quite a bit of work on it, sad to see it gone now. My uni has been informed and they will check the cctv tapes. Ive searched the usual places, ebay, gumtree, craigslist but nothing. What over tips you guys got concerning the recovery of my bicycle? Thanks

What are the chances of my Uni showing me the cctv footage, if they do find out who it is? I mean will they let me find out there identity as their is a chance the culprit could end up with two broken knee caps.

You have my sympathy. I've had so many bikes stolen and every time it makes me want to turn into the Hulk and smash the culprit's brains in!

Was your number 0001?

Maybe try 9999 next time.

4 digit combination locks are so so easy to get into. The combination can be worked out with a little play with it. Get yourself a good solid key locked lock.

Cops will do nothing, they will only give you a crime number, wife has had 5 nicked in the past, it don't matter how many locks you put on them aswell as they carry mini bolt cutters and they just go through them like butter.

Mobile angle grinders seem to be the rage these days by the more discerning thief. Nothing can stand in their way.

Ooh sorry to hear that, my hubby has lost so many bikes at the train station and always D locks them!! We have given up on expensive bikes and now look on our local Freecycle as often people are giving them away.....we've been gifted 2 now after explaining what happened to the previous ones!!

4 digit combination locks are crap you can even break the code just fiddle around with it for 30mins, use something more secure, btw you have no chance of getting cctv footage, they wont even allow you to watch it.

If I invest in something like this:

How hard will it be to cut and what tools with be needed to do the job? I hope criminals arent carrying blow torches around nowadays.

Would you or your parents have house insurance that covers bikes? Some policies allow this as long as you have a crime ref number!

I've caught neds ranging in age from 12 - 19 going around with Bolt cutters, Just about every chain/ cable lock is useless. Really expensive hardcore chains might help.
But a Reasonable 'D' type lock is usually plenty.

Too bad my parents home insurance only covers the house and not the contents.

You should always lock your bike with 2 types of lock, one cable and one d-lock...Why I hear you ask?

Because each one needs a different tool to open it and both are fairly large and not to be carried about.

Combination locks take no longer than 10 minutes to open with ZERO tools needed.

a bolt cutter could go through both

Bike thieves should have their fingers removed with bolt cutters.

Someone who carries a bolt cutter isn't going to be deterred by any kind of lock but a chancer may be put off if stealing the bike involves more than ten minutes fiddling with a combo lock.

Don't understand why anyone invests in a really expensive bike just to commute, you may as well just attach a big sign to it saying 'please steal me'.

Silly question but have you scoured the rest of the campus / uni, they may have took it for a laugh to get somewhere a bit quicker and just dumped it.
