I take it you've fitted a micro filter to the Sky box's phone line?

Either way, I've not had my Sky box connected to my phone line for the past 5 years.

no it isn't unless you want to update your box with the latest settings and use interactive services

I think you will find that the phone line must be kept connected for a minimum of 12 months.

Ive never had the phone line connected to mine. Not even in the first 12 months. Unplugged it as soon as the guy left.

I asked the sky man who fitted my box this week about this, he said you only really need it plugged into the phone line to use interactive services like box office etc.
If sky do contact you and ask you to plug it in he said to plug it in for 24 hours and then you should be fine to remove it again.

Taken from Sky's T&Cs

Interactive Discount

(b) You agree that, at all times from installation to the end of the Minimum Term, your Box will be fully and effectively connected to a Minidish and to a fixed and operational telephone line in the Territory which is capable of making outgoing calls. It is in the terms and conditions (as above) that you must keep the phone line connected at all times. Sky use this to download information from the box to see what has been going on with it, like keeping an eye if you will. I have never had my phone connected and have only needed to do it if I need an interactive service or box office etc.

Leave it disconnected but keep an extension handy if you need to hook it back up.

Because of where it is in the house I can't connect my box to the phoneline and they knew this when they put it in. The engineer said it didn't matter - I had had Sky for over 12 months before I had the sky+ HD box so was past the minimum contract term. He said it just meant I couldn't order the box office stuff with the remote, but if I wanted to watch a film I could phone up and order it that way. When he installed the new box he phoned up and got it all updated and everything that way.

Mine's never been connected. If I get a phone call from Sky then I'll thank them for letting me know that the phone socket has stopped working ;)

only really needs to be connected if you have multi room as checks are made to see if boxs are in same house.
I got pulled up on this lots by sky when i had multi room
my hd box has been unplugged for 3 years now as I get better adsl sync with it unpluged as I needed a long extention to the sky box

Ok i gave sky a call and they can't do anything because the dish is a communial dish
Basically i live in a flat and i think the dish is provided for 6 flats (1 block)

Is there anything i can do?
I cant see the council willing to run another cable from the dish for me
