Kids bike advice?

My son wants a bike from Santa. He's just 5 but quite a big boy. I was thinking 16" but just been down to Halfords and they've recommended this one -

http://www.halfords.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/product_storeId_10001_catalogId_10151_productId_264613_langId_-1_categoryId_165602#BVRRWidgetID

He did look quite comfortable on it and I know there's the £10 accessories deal this weekend too. Just wondered if it looked half decent at all - I know very little about bikes! It did feel quite light which was good given he is still a wee guy. Toys R Us weren't overly helpful and the one they recommended felt very heavy! Don't want to spend a fortune given he'll be out it pretty quick and he'll just use it for wee trips about the place but want him to be safe. I know bike deals always generate opinion on this site so figure worth an ask!

Thanks.

Suitable for 7-9 year olds

i know my kids and most of their friends prefer BMX style not the mountain bike style but i would rec halfords as the bikes are decent quality and can be built in store rather than ones from net where you have to build partly yourself

You need to measure his inside leg then match it to the wheel size
Taken from http://www.evanscycles.com/help/bike-sizing#childrens

Children's bike sizing chartRider Age or Height Size Suggested
Age Feet and Inches Centimetres
2 - 5 years 2' 10" - 3' 7" 85 - 110 Runner bikes
2 - 4 years 2' 10" - 3' 4" 85 - 100 12 inch wheel diameter
3 - 5 years 3' 1" - 3' 7" 95 - 110 14 inch wheel diameter
5 - 7 years 3' 7" - 4' 0" 110 - 120 16 inch wheel diameter
7 - 9 years 4' 0" - 4' 5" 120 - 135 20 inch wheel diameter
9 - 11 years 4' 5" - 4' 9" 135 - 145 24 inch wheel diameter
11+ years 4' 9"+ 145+ 26 inch wheel diameter

So yes according to this 16 inch should be fine

It all depends on the geometry of the frame design not just the wheel size. If you tried him on it and its okay then buy it - kids grow fast and give him 2 or 3 years and he'll be ready to move up to a size.....

Thanks for all the replies. He has sat on it and seemed comfortable but they did say it had to be that frame style so I guess that fits with the frame sixe rather than wheel size. Makes it a bit difficult to buy without trying him on a built one first though! His feet were flat on the ground on this 20" one but swung free on an 18" one in toys r us.

Thanks guys!

Have the same problem with my kids bikes - you could try and find one online which has an identical design but £80 is a decent price and Halfords should ensure everything is working (gears, brakes etc).

Yip, for safety reasons don't fancy building it myself, I don't know what I'm doing, clearly! Think will go down tomorrow before the £10 deal finishes, may as well get the benefit. There was a 18" one of the other style in toys r us that he fitted but it felt so heavy for a wee guy.

Cheers :D
