Killzone 3 Open Beta - 3rd Feb

Between the 3rd and the 15th of February, you will be able to download and play the Killzone 3 Open Beta from the PlayStation Store.

This Beta will offer you exclusive early access to the MP05 ‘Frozen Dam’ multiplayer level from Killzone 3, including all three online multiplayer modes – Guerrilla Warfare, Warzone and Operations – as well as the offline multiplayer mode, Botzone. A sprawling asymmetrical map set in an old dam facility, the playing field in MP05 has been carefully tailored to fit each of the multiplayer modes.

These are the four multiplayer modes included with the Open Beta: be available in the final game:
Guerrilla Warfare (16 players)

Guerrilla Warfare is a standalone multiplayer mode similar to classic Team Deathmatch: You and your teammates must try to kill as many of the opposing team as you can before the timer runs out. In this mode, only the downstream monitor houses and repair bay are accessible, giving the map a very frantic pace.
Warzone (24 players)

If you’ve played Killzone 2, you may already be familiar with Warzone. It’s a round-based multiplayer campaign that consists of five randomly ordered mini-missions. In this mode the power house and penstocks directly under the dam are accessible as well, so there’s more room to come up with different strategies and approaches to your goal.
Operations (16 players)

Operations is a new multiplayer campaign which aims to deliver a more cinematic, story-based gameplay experience, similar to that of Killzone 3’s single-player mode. It consists of a sequence of linear mini-missions, in which the ISA must try to secure the docks and destroy the dam, while the Helghast must try to protect the dam facility.
Botzone (16 players)

Botzone is an offline multiplayer mode ideal for those looking to get to grips with the controls, the weapons or the map layout before going up against live players. Each of the aforementioned multiplayer modes can be played offline, against CPU-controlled opponents.

For details of all the multiplayer maps in Killzone 3, see our map feature here.

Over the next couple of weeks keep your eyes on the PlayStation Blog and on Killzone.com for more information.

Has anybody pre-ordered the game on the strength of the Open Beta?

Or, conversely, has anybody cancelled their previous pre-order because of their experience with the Open Beta?

I have just been playing the open Beta for about an hour.

Impossible to find a game at first (half an hour trying), then I joined Firmsky's squad, and we went straight into a game no problem. Weird.

Game was fun, and unlock points were relatively easy to come by. Unfortunately lots of players were running round not having a clue what they were doing, but that should change once they get the hang of how the MP works. They seem to have tweaked some of the menus from the closed Beta (either that, or my memory is up the creak). The tactician's spotting ability seems to have been nerfed as well - it was way too overpowered before.

Unfortunately the matchmaking issue reared its ugly head, as in the closed Beta. Quite happily playing a few 12 vs 12 games, but then most of our team left, and the sides were really unbalanced. Unfortunately the game refused to drop anyone else on our side, so we played the whole game 12 vs 4. Not the fairest odds in the world. I really hope that GG get on top of the matchmaking issues before release day - it is about the only negative thing about the game atm.

Had about 45 minutes on it last night, no probs finding a game, matched up within 3 minutes, had 5 games here are the results;
1. last
2. last
3. third (yay!)
4. fourth
5. third
played as engineer, really enjoyed it, the game where i was third, got a 4 kill streak, which was the highest of anyone. High fived myself for that one!
In answer to your question fp, I hadn't pre-ordered it but I'm now seriously considering it!

I believe the connection issues are server problems, which are coming and going sporadically. Hopefully they will be sorted soon.

Some of you may be experiencing some connection issues with the new Killzone 3 open beta at the moment and I just wanted to let everyone that you are not the only one. Some people have been able to connect however others are being struck by a connection error constantly. Guerrilla believes this is due to overloaded servers and are currently working on a fix. So sit tight and you will be in the Killzone soon!

Did you have any matchmaking issues, sennasnit?

Having not played Killzone 2 online, I'm thoroughly enjoying Killzone 3's online multiplayer mode. Especially the Warzone mode. I think that was a brilliant idea, and I can easily see why Killzone 2 was so popular.

Warzone is a brilliant game mode Josh - it is always fresh, as you never know which mission is coming next. I prefer it to Guerilla Warfare. I need to try out Operations next to I am on.

You have to play "Operations" with a few online friends to see who is abused by the in-game characters in the cut scenes! :)

Sorry, 'f'c', I see what I typed may have looked like the two were different. My fault for trying to find a better image of the largest (most expensive) package.

I have just remembered that I had posted details of the "Helghast Edition" from the Official EU PlayStation Blog previously...

Will most likely pre order this as the problems of black ops have become too much for me. Will probablly make my final decison after playing the single player demo.

Does any one know if all retailers are offering the pre order map pack of the best KZ2 maps?

I have no idea which retailers are distributing the map packs. On the KZ3 website, it directs you to Amazon, Zavvi, Grainger, Play and Blockbuster to make your pre-order, however none of those stores (or any others that I can see) make reference to the map pack coming with pre-orders of the standard edition.

One of the producers @GG posted an article on the PS Blog about the map pack, but has not replied with any more specific information, despite numerous questions on the subject:

http://blog.eu.playstation.com/2011/02/03/introducing-the-killzone-3-retro-map-pack/

Personally, I have the DS3 Limited Edition pre-ordered from Zavvi. Hopefully I will get the map pack code, but if not, I will probably buy it from the PSN Store at some point (so long as it is sensibly priced).

Downloaded it this morning, and had a go on the "botzone". Really like it, and I may be tempted to play online when my preorder arrives.

I did say that with Black Ops, but played the single player, and then about an hour online, and haven't played it since GT5 came out.

I have been struggling to connect to the Killzone servers, and I really hope that GG/Sony sort this problem out before the end of the 'Beta'. As it stands, I can only see this beta putting people off buying the full game, as the appear to be in complete mess, with just 17 days to release.

I really do question the logic of releasing a 'Beta' so close to release day. They may well be using the opportunity to fine tune their servers and fix any connection issues, but that is not how it comes across. Most people playing the KZ3 MP will be expecting to get a full taste of the game - and connecting to the flippin' thing is the most basic and essential part of that.

Yes, I totally agree. Have you downloaded the update to Version 1.01? It made no difference with connections for me. I can only assume the servers must be switched off around 12midnight (UK time) as I do not seem to be able to connect to a new game beyond then.

Often if I wait 5 minutes (or play a match of offline/"Botzone") & then try again the problem is resolved & I can connect, but there have been a few days when I've just given up & played something else.

I played "Killzone 2" online for eighteen months before starting the single player campaign. As it turned out I did not like it, so stopped after a couple of hours of game-play & went back online again.

As the single player demo is out this week for PlayStation Plus subscribers (& next week for everybody [else]), this may influence prospective customers one way or another, but I have spent more time waiting for online games in the Open Beta that I ever did in the Closed Beta(s). Even longer than in the Beta versions of "SOCOM: Confrontation"... and that was a mess (initially).

So close to release this does not look good... I'm wondering if the Open Beta is so far removed from the commercial/retail release now that changes have been made since & this has impacted the connection settings meaning there are issues that only need to be resolved in the Open Beta & the retail version is fine.

If not, it is odd that the Open Beta has not been removed (given all the problems with connecting) before re-issuing to "save face" (or any of The A-Team). Then, again, perhaps the issues cannot be resolved without many players (more than the previous Beta releases) hitting the servers concurrently.

A formal statement would be helpful... but, as you know, Sony Computer Entertainment are not very forthcoming with information of this nature until they are very certain of what to say in case they are ever held accountable for stating something that is later proven to be incorrect.

As you said, 'fc', I hope this is resolved by the end of this month.

PS. Shall we organise a clan match against the developers (Guerrilla Games)? Or do you not fancy a defeat against them like the [TSR] clan suffered? :)

The "Botzone" is good to practice (with all the weaponry unlocked) but I don't think anything prepares you for your first time online! :)

The online (only) "Operations" mode is also a new experience.

Glad you are enjoying what you have played so far though.

As a follow up to my last comment, I have been on my PS3 this morning, and connected to the multiplayer within 5 seconds of selecting the option. I was in a game within 30 seconds of start up.

Hopefully this success will continue this evening, and over the next week or so. Some server stability is definately called for. If the lack of servers is annoying the existing KZ followers, heaven knows what it is doing to the 'undecided'.

........on a positive note, I have now near enough learnt the Frozen Dam map, and have been enjoying upgrading my Tactician character, setting up Tactical Spawn Points to help turn the tide of battle.

I would certainly enjoy playing against Guerilla Games, if the opportunity arose, but would like to learn the map layouts before sending myself in to such a potential slaughter.

I have not had the opportunity to read the official Forum(s) about the connection issues. I think I'll try to find the time to get an idea of the extent of these... or consider nightshift work from March onwards! ;)

With regards your Tactician role, I have given up counting the number of times I'm so eager to get back into the battlefield & I hit [X] too many times so I miss a new spawn point. I hope your efforts are not in vain! :)

Seriously, though, yes, every soldier class has a valuable part to play & it just demonstrates the mark of good map design how much your individual game changes if you use a different class.

It also means if you are failing to dominate at one class, you can choose another for the current game. Somewhat different to "Call of Duty: Black Ops", for instance, as each class is differentiated by weaponry. At least with "Killzone 2"/"Killzone 3" the class variations in relation to the skills they offer during game-play make a transition mid-game worthwhile.

Killzone 3 Open Beta Update
Countries: AE, AU, GB, IE, NZ
---
It’s less than a week since the Killzone 3 Multiplayer Beta hit PlayStation Store, but already you’ve racked up some impressive numbers. There’s been a staggering 62 million – million! – kills, of which around ten per cent have been Brutal Melee kills. Some 400,000 games have been blitzed through, with well over half a million players appearing on the Killzone 3 leaderboards. And two of those players have stormed through the one million XP barrier already. The Helghast don’t know what’s hit them.

Your dedication to the cause hasn’t gone unnoticed over at developer Guerrilla Games. Far from it: the team has been working around the clock to analyse and act upon your feedback. Below you’ll find a round-up of issues discovered thanks to your hard work, and the solutions that Guerrilla is working on to refine your experience:

High level issues discovered:

Connection problems
High load caused the database to fall over
Score posting
Flickering screens
Ribbon stats not updating
Vulgarity filter

Solutions underway:

Guerrilla has already released a patch, which is live at the time of writing.

Guerrilla has made improvements for the server connection issues. The server was brought down and put back up for that on Monday, 7 February 2011.

The problems with the filter should be fixed now.

Guerrilla will continue to update the servers and patch the Beta if needed and are watching your feedback closely on Killzone.com

From Guerrilla: “We are happy that we are encountering these issues now, during a Beta, instead of after launch. This will help us get ready for the huge amount of people that are expected to go online at launch.”

“This Beta also gives us the opportunity to change Killzone 3 based on feedback that we get. Although we’ve already gone gold, we can and will make server side adjustment to things like weapon damage, balancing issues etc. So this is not a demo; it is a Beta for us to test the game.

“Thanks for your continued patience and help in getting this tested properly.”

So, keep playing – the more you experience the Killzone 3 Muliplayer Beta, the more you’ll contribute to an even more polished final game.
