Sky Sports News sources understand that Kevin Keegan met Newcastle owner Mike Ashley for talks on Friday.

Keegan left St James' Park last week after days of uncertainty over whether he had been sacked as manager or walked away.

He later confirmed that he had resigned because he did not have the control he wanted over club matters.

The announcement brought an end to Keegan's second spell in charge of the Magpies, after he dramatically succeeded Sam Allardyce as boss in January.

It is now believed that Keegan has spoken to Ashley in London, although there has been no confirmation from Newcastle.

It is not known what the pair may have discussed, as speculation continues over who will be the next Newcastle manager.

The latest development has propelled Keegan back among the favourites for the job, while the likes of Gustavo Poyet and Paul Ince have been strongly linked.

One bookamker has slashed keegans odds of being next?! newcastle manager to even money! The soap opera continues

It ridicolous, or could be a very clever move by ashley to come up with this rumour to stop the protests tomorrow (still not sure where I stand on protesting will be boycotting bars, club shops etc but not sure about a march or turning up late)

We're quids in, to be honest it couldn't have happened at a better time, what with us being all over the media because of Curbs walking and Zola coming in.

Oddly anyway we play WBA tomorrow, they also don't have a sponsor, i'm pretty sure it's the first time in Premier League history that two teams will play each other without a sponsor

It could be, it's probably more likely to be about a compensation package or perhaps offering him a job upstairs to keep the fans happy. Surely they wont re hire him, the third coming of the messiah lol

4th coming, 1 as a player 3 as a manager??? The mood up here still ain't happy. The club needs restructured, and Ashley needs to get his hands in his pocket. I could see a KK return to be honest.

Really, I was looking forward to you appointing a new manager this weekend, that way Zola and your manager would have managed their first game against each other! Would have been quite good

I take it your really not happy with the Director of football then? I think it will work really well down here, I just don't think Curbs was the manager to work with one, I think Keegan is but I don't think Wise is the right DoF for Newcastle / Keegan

Nah Keegan would want 100% control over all transfers. totally don't need a DOF is this country, Alex Ferguson proves that.

seems like most newborn kids in Newcastle are being christened "Keegan" - studies suggest that they will walk sooner than other babies :whistling:

Alex Ferguson isn't all that, when you have the money that he has had over his time it's quite easy to become one of the best teams in the country when you bat some numbers around;

Tevez - Will cost £32 million all together
Berbatov - 30 Million
Hargreaves - 17 million
Ferdinand - 30 million

That's £109,000,000 on 4 players

There players are paid anything up to 150k pw

Money talks, Robinho wouldn't have joined Blackburn last season to play under Hughes or ever Man City on the 30th August, it's only when they got the money that they could attract him. When you can attract that caliber of player silverware will soon follow.

That's why Ferguson has been lucky, I can't think of any players in the squad who have they picked up for cheap and nurtured into a world class player. If he only ever had a shoe string budget like Curbs did at Charlton there wouldn't have been too much difference between them

When will the Newcastle fans realise that Ashley's only interest in the club is financial - the same as his predecessors. Presumably, if he can get Keegan to work for less money (and there's a rumour going around that Keegan may be a bit short of that at present) then why not take him back. Nothing in football surprises me any more.

MUFC youth policy works
Scholes, Neville, Giggs ....and a lot more besides
cheap buys: Schmiechel, Solksjaer spring to mind ....a certain Eric Cantona was bought cheap too

Errm, Gary Neville, Wes Brown, Ryan Giggs, Paul Scholes. And, believe me, I hate Man U & Ferguson as much as you. Nevertheless, you have to admit that he has unearthed some talent over the years. Ronaldo cost him £12.2m five years ago. What's he done for the team and how much is he worth now?

I meant in the current squad, by that I meant first team 11, probably none anymore. It doesn't really work anyway, it produces players as do all teams but rarely do they get into your first team squad for the PL, to have a successful academy you need to have regular youth players graduating from the academy all the way into the first team

Most off the Premier League teams have produced some good talent over they years, you look at the list of players you gave and none of them are superstars in the Man Utd squad anymore, their best players have all been bought

Berbatov, Carrick, Hargreaves, Ferdinand, Rooney, Tevez for instance and there are no signs of them being replaced from within the academy

Ronaldo is a great player yes, I don't know how much he is worth, city are supposed to preparing an offer of £135 million, he's not worth that much in my opinion, not even half of that but then something is only worth what your willing to pay for it
