After 4 weeks and several emails and phone calls to KLM they have decided I am entitled to a refund as I was stranded in Atlanta for a week as my flight was cancelled due to the Volcano situation. Here's their email (needless to say I have asked how they calculated this figure) -

Dear Mr. xxxxxx,
We hereby inform you that KLM will credit your account for a refund, related to the below mentioned ISA tickets.

Ticket No Refundable Amount Administration Fee Refund Reason Calculation Remarks
xxxxxxxxxxxx 0.00 0.00 VOLCANO
xxxxxxxxxxx 0.00 0.00 VOLCANO
xxxxxxxxxx 0.00 0.00 VOLCANO
xxxxxxxxxx 0.00 0.00 VOLCANO
Total: 0.00 0.00

Total amount to be paid: GBP 0.00

Best Regards,

KLM Refund Department

 Something went wrong on their calculations!

BTW, how did you get home in the end?

non-refundable ticket, it probably sent auto as you didn't check in on your flight

(plus they obviously hate you and wanted to remind you you're not getting a refund)

Spend 3 hours on the phone getting transferred from dept to dept before someone could help. The earliest date they could offer was 7 days later. We could have flown to Amsterdam on day 4 but would have been stuck there.

We actually went to the airport on the day we were meant to fly as we had to return a hire car. The staff (Delta) were clueless, the queues were huge and there was a distinct shortage of staff. From memory there was approx 20 counters and only 4 were manned. There was a lot of tutting going on from disgruntled travellers.
