i dont think its bad value - i assume this is a tesco reduction?
its basically a top brand version of a standard laptop for a touch less imo.

thats my opinion id wait for some more informed replies though, also depends what you want to use it for.

Thanks for your reply, no I cant be bothered to get into the whole Tesco thing.

Its actually using a code I found on here, I will let everyone know once I have had some replies.

Looking for a half decent laptop around the £350 mark for home use, mainly internet and photos.

I have no clue about Laptops as Ive never owned one. Been told the bigger the the HD and Ram the better, but I always thought it was how good the processor was!?

Any other opinions would be much appreciated.

I would snap it up at that price. Vaio laptops hold their value pretty well for obvious reasons and are generally pretty good looking things.

If neither of this points appeal to you then you could probably getting similar specs for a touch less but I can't see you finding anything for <299.99 so for the extra 50 I would take it.

Care to say where this was?? My bro is after a lappy and would take this one I know.

It's really a combo of the lot, the better the processor the more stuff you can get done quicker but it can only run as fast as the ram can deliver.

HDD - well depends what you want it for, if you want to store bucket loads of photos and videos then you prob want a large one but then again external HDD's are so cheap if you don't need instant access all the time then these can be pretty good alternatives.

Ram is also only as good as the maker, you can get quik specced ram that is poorly made and will be less efficient than slower ram by a better name.

I would say you were pretty safe with sony, I'm sure they use Samsung ram etc which I've never had a problem with.

Of course you're paying for the name but with that discount I'm not sure there isn't a lot in it.

Many Thanks for your reply, just a quicky:

What would you choose the sony or:

HP Pavillion

AMD Athlon QL-65 processor. 3072MB memory. 250GB Hard Drive. 15.6-in monitor. DVD RW SM LS optical drive. ATI Radeon HD4530 graphics. Windows Vista Home Basic.

Both will be same price.

yeah should be ok for that then, psst everyone knows about littlewoods code^^
processor, ram,hdd all pretty decent
for what you want to do the graphics isn't an issue
sony have a quality feel to them its a nice buy imo especially as you dont have to trawl arounds tescos

HP do pretty solid laptops.

I would say the main difference here is graphics, if you are going to be using it for gaming . photo shop etc then you would need a pretty reliable graphics.

If you are simply using it for the net, photos, the odd video etc then I would put my money into the Vaio.

Although there isn't a lot of difference between Vista Premium and Home Basic you do get Media Centre with the former and it's aesthetically more pleasant to view.

think hps cpu a bit weaker along with HDD but graphics alot stronger

(did the hp just jump up 70/80quid? shows as 649 before discounts now )
edit: lol so has the sony

edit2: ignore the price rises they both still the same - but they did show higher.
noticed that before on the site sometimes all different prices - weird!

First thing noticed is the different make of processor. I would go for the Intel.
3GB RAM is sufficient as most people use a 32-bit OS and that's the max 32-bit OS's can actually use.

250 vs 320 GB hard drive. Both are enough.
I normally split the hard drive into 2 partitions, 1 for the OS and one for data storage. OS only uses about 10GB, plus installed programs means that it'd use a max. of 50GB. Leaving you with 200/270GB to spare. This is more than enough for most people, and additional internal or external hard drives are only about £60 should you ever need more space.

ATI Radeon 4530HD Mobility vs Intel Graphics Media Accelerator. The ATI will have dedicated memory, whereas the Intel utilizes your main memory. However, the Intel performs well enough to compete with low-end cards with dedicated memory. Neither is suited for demanding games, but both are sufficient for the "average user". For more graphic intensive apps, such as Photoshop, the ATI is better suited.

Overall, at the same price, I'd rather go for the Sony than the HP. Sony's are far more reliable and at that price it's better value than the HP. It's mainly the graphics letting the Sony down, but you could see if there's something similar priced which includes a dedicated graphics chip such as one of the NVidia series.

Well for your use the specs don't really matter, any computer will be more than capable of web browsing and basic photo editing. You would have been better off looking at the quality of the screen, speakers, keyboard etc as well as how noisy and hot it gets. Sony have a reasonable reputation though, with the worst accusations usually being that they're overpriced sometimes.

Thanks for this post - I just saw the same laptop myself on Littlewoods and was doing a quick search to see if it was any good or available any cheaper. Will order when I can get home and clear the old cookies.
