My parents are thinking of getting a laptop, and as my knowledge is pretty limited about this please can I ask what sort of thing I should be looking for with a £400 budget? They will just want it for internet surfing, storing photos etc. Rep given for any advise. Thanks.

For that sort of usage specs don't matter so look at things like build quality and battery life.

your parents will appreciate a big screen too !

You probably don't need to spend as much as £400 for the one you want. A large harddrive is a must, but I wouldn't rely on a laptop to store photos; I'd advise buying an external drive too.

The details on that one look really good, thanks. Do you know of any good deals available on the high street? I think they may prefer to buy instore. Rep left for you. :)

That depends on how much they want to move it about as bigger screens mean heavier laptops. (if they don't want to make it about at all then desktops are better quality and cheaper to repair).

for starters u need to get them the message that a laptop is not a storage medium, otherwise they will fill the hdd and when it breaks will be very upset at the loss of all those pics of grand kiddies etc etc.

Compaq are good value machines.

Agree. Spend less and get a separate hard drive.

I would imagine they would not use it for any games (like me). Don't go for lots of spec they they will never need or use. I got mine from Dell which is a useful website to look at. Delivered direct.

I will probably put photos on a cd for them as I know thats the safest way to store them. They dont have the room for a desktop so a laptop would be ideal for them, just a bit unsure of which one to get for them.

that will be ideal.

and then buy a £40 external hard drive for photo etc backups. cd / dvd is unreliable as a backup medium

Ive been looking around and ive managed to get the Sony Vaio at £299. Its still with Telephones Online but through Amazon. You have to pay £6.99 postage and there is no quidco, but as from what everyone said, I think this is a good deal. Ive posted it seperately as a deal for anyone who missed out on the orignal deal like me. Thanks to everyone for your help. Much appreciated!
