Laptop comparison help!

Evenin' HUKDers,

I am looking to purchase a brand-spanking new lappy, as I am off to University in September (hopefully!). I have looked around and narrowed my search to these two:

http://www.ebuyer.com/product/190374 ASUS X5EAE
http://www.ebuyer.com/product/179792 Acer Aspire 5732Z

Having previously only owned Compaq Presarios, I haven't a clue what the general opinion of Acers and ASUS' are, and tbh, they can't be worse than Compaq, surely?

Also, I've only ever had Intel processors - I am rather new to AMD and so I'm not sure if the ASUS' is better than Intel's Dual Core. They both have 4GB DDR2, both 15.6, both 500GB hard drive, so it's mainly the computers. I've heard ebuyer's record for returns is quite good anyway, so it should all be squeaky clean in that department. However I am open to suggestions - my budget is up to £450 unless like, 8GB RAM, Quad-core etc. for like £500 haha. One can dream eh ;)

Thanks in advance :)

Can't beat an Asus for reliability
Acers are always failing

Are they . People must not look after them then. Cos my [2] 2 year old Acers are still going strong.

I know My daughters Acer is broken but that's what happens when you drop them and the screen smashes.

Argos have same Acer for £379 with webcam (I think from memory)
#3
The Asus is nice looking, chocolate colour. I have one. Mine is the X5DIJ though with 2 gig and t3100 for £299 @ Argos
#4
The Asus with m320 is @ pos 117 as opposed to the T3100 @ pos 101 and the T4300 @ pos 81

http://www.notebookcheck.net/Mobile-Processors-Benchmarklist.2436.0.html

The acer 5732z @ Argos for £379 has the T4400 CPU @ pos 70 (not quite same spec though eg might be 3gig and 250 gig hdd)

http://www.ebuyer.com/product/189888 is the X5DIJ Exclusive to ebuyer (speakers are very quiet though IMO)

Trouble is with the asus though is 2 gig of memory is hard wired to mainboard well it is on my X5DIJ (Asus must be confident of the memory though to do that also (there are 5 screws) 2 left hinge 2 right hing one on battery compartment (right hand side and the back of case slides off away from screen)

Everest cannot read SPD, sticking 4 gig in as opposed to 2 made no difference in speed and even WEI stayed at 4.9 (which seems slow as my Toshiba basic A210 gets a score of 5.5 with 2 gig of ram same speed etc)

there is one in aldi for £500 which looks good. i dont really know anything about them to offer any advice though about whats best. i have a compaq presario and the mothreboard went in mine hp mended it though as it was a common fault in the model. o/h has a dell he seems to find them helpful.
think the one in aldi i a medion which was the make of my own computer before i got the laptop. x

2 out of 1000's isn't a good way to measure reliability as not every Acer laptop will fail, But a bigger % of Acers will fail when compaired to Asus's

Nonsense stats but where are they ?
#10
If a shop comes on here and shows with proof eg Stats of returns that are Acer returns are higher than Asus returns where they have a genuine fault then fair enough but rumours and opinions on the internet are not facts.
#11
TBH I would semi agree with you based on never seeing any stats. But having owned both there is not really that much difference.(build my own machine and I would choose an Asus mainboard over an Acer (The asus I have just bought has a clicky set of F keys (the first Acer laptop I bought had faulty memory) So maybe you have a point clicky keyboard V's faulty memory ?

Anyways OP depending what you are wanting to use it for eg if it were Games none of the above really cut it.

The Asus X5DIJ with T3100 CPU 2 gig Ram 250Gb HDD 1.3 Webcam from argos for £299 is a decent machine for the money for general use(providing you listen to music through headphones)

I didn't think of Argos, thanks haha.
That's a helpful website, thank you very much :)

I intend to use it for many things and multi-tasking, hence why i've been looking at power and performance. I mean I'll be doing a lot of word-processing, possibly gaming, heavy internet usage etc. so I'll be sucking so much juice out of it :)
don'tasciime you've been a great help, thanks for your contributions! +rep

12% from 210 is not that that bad compared to 6% from 70 my maths is not great but that to me seems a little worse . However end user reports may not be entirely accurate you think they would know but some users do not

LOL

its a percentage, chances are given the same amount of each brand of laptop twice as many acers would fail compaired to asus's
the failer rates are laptops that have failed, totally seperate from user ratings

Just don't get a dell, 1 in 4 chance of it failing

Just out of curiousity, why are you so willfully blind to reality? You're preaching this as gospel, despite having an extremely small sample group to base your info on, you're dealing in absolutes that you've only assumed to be the case, and you're ignoring a major factor, which is how long it takes for each manufacturer to resolve an issue when it goes wrong, something far more important than whether something will go wrong, which it invariably will with any system from any supplier.

So you are saying that the 6% has no chance of increasing if you asked 150 people with an Asus or even matched it to 210 people with an asus.

The ratings for tv shows are worked out from a few 1000 people, the results on that link are more than enought for the much smaller user base of laptop users

As I said then my 2 Acers are working fine.:lol

29% for M$

Thanks guys, I have purchased the Acer on account of the fact that multiple people have said in the reviews that they've found it to be DDR3 RAM as opposed to DDR2 in the description, and that it's £50 cheaper anyway.

Thanks for all of your help :) x

Where from Argos or ebuyer. I'm guessing Ebuyer.
