laptop display help - display has come in from the right

hi,

the display on my laptop has come in about an inch from the right hand side, i suspect it to be a driver issue as when i uninstall the driver from device manager and restart, the display is fine, but then xp installs the same driver again and then next time i start my laptop or try to change the resolution the same thing happens.

i have an older driver downloaded but xp won't let me install it as it is older than the one installed, and i can't stop xp from automatically installing its own driver, even in safemode!!

Try doing a system restore.
#2
Have you tried getting the latest driver from the manufacturer's website?
#3
Check you've got it set to the native screen res (probably 1280*800 if you've got a 15.4" screen), and either reset or adjust the screen alignment options in driver control panel.

the latest driver is actually from windows update not from the manufacturer, like i say i have downloaded a driver thats older than the current and im thinking this will cure it but before i can install it windows automatic installer starts up and installs it.

I tried disabling the plug n play service but then after reboot there are no devices listed in device manager (suggestion off a google search)

i recently bought the laptop off a hukd guy but he doesn't know whats happened, he says it used to be ok but his brother had a fiddle about with it and that has happened. im not blaming him or anything just saying the seller says it was working before his brother got to it, so im thinking either a software issue or driver

it is a 14.1 " screen but i don't get the option for 1280*800 resolution, either 800 x 600, or 969 x 7 hundred something.

how do you reset or adjust the screen alignment

Depends on the model of the laptop, since the method is video driver specific.

It's a software issue, but there's no point doing a full reinstal t correct a single broken setting. What kind of laptop have you actually got?

its a toshiba satellite 6100, i think i might have found a website which deals with this issue, apparently it is an issue on all these laptops, will keep you updated, and yes its a driver issue

turn off auto update temporarily, go back to working driver, then do a manual update and de-select the display driver it brings up and select NEVER SHOW ME THIS UPDATE AGAIN

then restart and put auto update back on
