Laptop Help! Do not know which one to choose!

Hi,

Currently I am looking at buying a laptop and I have settled on one, the Toshiba SAT L350-170 from Comet. Do you guys, with all your computing knowledge, think that this is a good deal for a 17" laptop? Do you think that there are other alternatives which would be better? Also is there anywhere else which sells this laptop cheaper? If I order the laptop online from 3PM when do you think that it will arrive?

Is it really that much better because IMO I would sacrifice 0.2 GHZ and 1GB of RAM for a saving of £10 and a larger screen and an IMO better brand.

Is this laptop to carry about or sit on a desk most of the time?

99% of the time I will be sitting on my bed using it so size and weight are not a problem mate. Infact, I would prefer the screen to be as large as possible.

dont think the one you are looking at is a core duo though???

I have found this lapto cheaper at laskys.com for £2 less although I can not find their free delivery times. Does anyone know if their's are shorter than Comet's free delivery times? Also which one would be ideal for receiving the laptop before Christmas?

I am still looking for alternatives and any help or advice or alternatives you have would be much appreciated.

dont think the tosh is that good tbh. No core 2 duo and small l2 cache (1mb).

this is a much faster laptop, cheaper but with a slightly smaller screen. I have it and it is blisteringly fast.

It is a Core Duo not a Core 2 Duo, the only difference is that Core 2 Duo's have 2MB Cache while Core Duo's have 1MB Cache, will not make any noticeable difference in my opinion.

That is a good laptop although it has a smaller HDD and a smaller screen and it is White??? and the brand is not as good as the Toshiba. I might get it depending on what it looks like in the flesh, what are your opinions of it?

17" is very big.

My cousin got a 17" when studying architecture and regretted it as carrying it was like lugging around a backpack full of bricks.
#16
I ordered this one: http://www.play.com/PC/PCs/4-/5890964/-/Product.html?searchstring=dv5-1000ea&searchsource=0
£475 after 5% rac voucher

Based on the latest Montevina centrino platform, with a very good spec for a low price.
Good reviews too: http://www.pcpro.co.uk/reviews/239475/hp-pavilion-dv51000ea.html

Things is that I'll never take it outside so I do not think that it would be a huge problem. I have already compared a 17" to a 15" laptop and the difference was huge. Also one thing I like about the Toshiba is that it has a full sized keyboard which is an advantage compared to the smaller keyboards found on other laptops.

LOL, I haven't (at least not yet:). I would love to see any other alternatives that people can dig up, is the Acer previosuly posted the best alternative in your opinions. I do like the specs although the looks, colour and brand are putting me off.

wait till the sales
#23

Really? It is a similar price point and has a slightly better CPU but the brand is not as good and the screen is smaller. Thanks for that but I am definetly not going to consider this. Keep trying though mate and I appreciate the effort you and the others have made.

Also, (incase I buy the Toshiba, although haven't decided yet!) does anyone know how long long Laskys.com and Comet's free delivery times are and which is likelier to get it to me by Christmas if I order by 3PM.
#24
if you do go for the L350-170 you can pick it up from Argos for the same price.. don't know if they are still doing their gift voucher thing for spending over £100

Do you reckon they will have anything good though as they usually reduce laptops which are in the £200-£300 range(AKA the ones no one want) and tend not to reduce the sought after models.
#26
Its not as if prices are gonna go up if you wait a week, worth a try.

I read up and there seem to be no problems with the Toshiba which is great!

I think that I might just go for the Toshiba and buying it from Dixons using their 5% discount codes which should make it around £370 unless someone can explain to me what the Argos voucher trick is as I would rather get it from them as I can pick it up tommorow.

Thanks for all the help everyone, it is very appreciated!:thumbsup:

Argos used to let you spend 100 quid and give you a ten quid voucher in return
So what you did was buy vouchers in packs of 100 quid at the tills.
Then you went back to till and bought the item with the 400 quid of vouchers
ie you would get 40 quid in vouchers back on the vouchers and another ten quid voucher when you bought any item over 100 quid.
So you would have 50 quid in vouchers. :whistling:

Argos were giving away a £5 voucher if you spent over £50 and a £10 one if you spent over £100 - they have finished the promotion now so forgot what I said about it

best to try that on a saturday morning when they have the school kids working on the tills as you can't get vouchers for buying vouchers - see rule 11

160gb should be fine for most users and 15.4" to a 17" isnt a huge difference at all.

The laptop is actually black with a cream full size keyboard. Build quality seems great.

remember that a bigger screen = less battery life. The tosh is pretty slow so HD playback may be jittery on it.

the main difference between dual core and core 2 duo is speed (core 2 duo is much faster) and the power consumption - Core2duo is much better in a laptop as it uses less power.

Purchasing a High-Definition Capable PC

There are many computer configurations capable of playing high definition content. The system you buy should depend on the level of quality you want to experience.

Minimum Configuration
(to play 720p video)
2.4 GHz processor
384 MB of RAM
64 MB video card
1024 x 768 screen resolution

Optimum Configuration
(to play 1080p video with 5.1 surround sound)
1.8 GHz Intel Core Duo or higher processor (or equivalent);
3.0 GHz Intel Pentium 4 or higher processor (or equivalent)
512 MB of RAM
128 MB video card
1920 x 1440 screen resolution
