Hiya,
My mom's got a laptop (don't ask what brand etc as I really don't know) and it's only got something like a 2gb memory, she wants to get wireless internet on there but needs more memory and I'm sure you can get a USB thingy to plug in. Could you please help me and point me in the right direction of what to buy.
Thanks in advance,
Kind Regards,
Sam xxx

The laptop may already have a wireless card in it.
If you press the 'Alt' key and F1 (I think, it may have an aerial symbol on it!) it may turn on/off the wireless card
So you can then set up a wireless connection to the wireless router

Would a USB flash drive do the job?
#6
It's a really old laptop hence 2gb of memory which is mostly used up
#7
I think you need to provide more information, what operating system is it on, if its xp did a little box pop up in the bottom left that said virtual memory was low?

Are you not confusing REAL memory (RAM) with hard disk memory.

I think you need to check how much memory she has of each.

As has been said, 2Gb of memory is a lot if it is RAM memory but not if it is hard disk memory.

If it is a fairly modern laptop (2 or 3 years old) then wireless will probably already be built in, if it is older than that then probably not.
#9
oh you mean it has a 2gb harddrive?

Oh right,so you are talking about Hard drive memory. There are a lot of external hard drives, whitch connects to USB.But the best thing is to clean up your HD from unwanted stuff, and you will have som free space.
Amazon has 500GB hard drive for £64.98. http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/B000WP0NM8/ref=nosim/2009-external-hard-drive-21

But for 2GB hard disk it'd have to be at least ten years old I'd imagine.

EDIT: Unless it's an eee PC.

lot of help been offering here so ill backout dont want to confuse anyone by having loads of suggestions coming at once

Hiya,
Sorry to confuse you all, It's 2GB Hard disk memory, it wasn't the virutal memory popup. It's on XP I think, I'm fairly sure it's over 10 years old, my mom really got ripped off with it cos she paid over £200 for it about a year ago!!

With that Amazon link Maxima, do you just plug it into the USB and the space is on there??

Yeap, just plug-in to any USB socket and you have 500GB of hard disc space extra.:)

Brilliant, Thank you all for helping xxxxxxxxxxx

You've all been repped too xxx

i think 500gb might be a bit overkill
#18
any cheaper??
#19
any usb harddrive/pen will give you more memory, but if your mam has coped with 2gb for a year no there is no way she'll ever be able to fill 500gb.

edit: how are you going to connect to the internet, a usb dongle?
#20
yeah USB dongle, and I know I don't need 500gb just looking for a smaller one
#21
as your using it for a laptop id recommend one of the usb powered ones, as you dont want to have to plug it into the mains. do you think an 8gb flash pen would do?
#22
Hiya,
That'd be brilliant an 8GB one, where could I get one from??

There's an 8GB USB stick here for £15

Although, if it is over ten years old then it won't have any USB ports so that doesn't help much.

Does the casing have any writing on it that could be a model number? Or even a specification or two to tell use the approximate age?

EDIT: Mind you, if it was 10 years old then it wouldn't be able to run windows XP, I'm afraid you're still confusing us :(

One thing you need to bear in mind WRT USB drive.. The fact that there's only 2GB space left means that this is almost certainly an old lappy with USB 1.1 ports. It would be better that someone clean the laptop

If we can have the make and model number, that will be a big help.

yeah it would be better that someone cleaned up the existing harddrive to leave a reasonable bit of room, but then save everything not required onto some external memory.

im with you on this one, i wouldnt of though 2gb worth of space was enough for a xp install, dont people have to use a stripped out version to install it on the eee?
#27
Hiya,
Thank you all for your help, the laptop's at a friends so I'll have to nip over and check the specs and then post it on here,
Thanks again,
Kind regards,

I think there's only 2GB of space total, I know software is getting more bloated but a mobile internet application shouldn't require 2GB of space!
#29
Muddling through some of the confusion, it sounds like that laptop needs scrapping. Buying an external hard drive, especially a 500Gb desktop drive isn't going to solve anything.
An internet app won't need 2Gb, but if that is the total size of the hard drive, there may only be 100Mb or less free space.

Hiya,
I've got the information for you:
system: windows xp, professional, version 2002, sevice pack 2. Registered to: home 55274-OEM-0011903-00101 Computer: mobile AMD athlon(tm) XP2500+ 1.86GHz, 448 MB of RAM

6.65GB used space and 49.2GB space left

My mom told me it was 2GB, so I really am confused why the wireless internet won't work. Can you please help!!
