Laptop help please

bassically yesterday a program crashed and i had to restart, when i did the laptop was going slow as hell, lagging etc, the program has been uninstalled and so has everything was installed yesterday (a few drivers etc)

from what i can tell the lagging is related to sound ie, when it lags the sound carackles like hell, playing music using spotify or wmp uses a ridiculous amount of cpu usage it jumps by 40-50% and then it starts crackling

i had orrigionally thought i might have got a virus because it was going so slow (not as slow now but not as fast as it should be going) a full system scan picked up nothing but it took a hell of a lot longer than usual (bout 1hour more)

not a clue whats going on but its piss1ng me off, any help appreciated

currently defragmenting the hardrive (not that i expect that to make any difference) and will then try a game like fallout 3 - something that demands a lot from the laptop to see if its a cpu problem

Go into system devices and see if your sound card is working properly?

Control Panel, system then device manager, well thats if you have vista.

If not just run a search for device manager.

My laptop has insurance so I just send it back to them when I have a problem with it, does yours have anything like that, or anyone you trust to have a wee nosy about.

How old is it btw?

the only thing i can think of is interfeering drivers or something as it effed up when i had to restart via holding down the power button, and theres no way that had ******ed up my hardware so it must be a software issue i will get the windows boot disc out later tonight n hope tht fixes it, anyone got any idea how long tht will take???

I've had this on a Advent 8109 laptop . I installed Windows [XP] and the drivers and all seemed well . Started to put programs on , then anti-virus etc and still no problems . The problems started after SP3 automatically installed , there was a sound lag , with an echooy sound . The laptop took ages to started up with a black screen for ages and it eventually got slower. I also noticed the screen res was poor and not as sharp . I got sick of it and did a re-install . Although I haven't put all the programs back on the laptop is excellent with no sound or graphics problems .I just think SP3 has maybe overwritten some drivers or something as I cannot think what else it could have been .
Sometimes the only way to sort things out is make a fresh start ................a re-install ............. a bit drastic I know , but it always works.
