My laptop (dell deal from CPW few months back) wont burn cds! It started other day when it crashed whole laptop burning a cd. Then tonight trying to burn a cd, says its not a new disc and that I need to insert a new disc. I have inserted in many new discs, says same. What should I do? It said I may need to reinstall software for cd drive, what does that mean and how do I do that? Think I maybe need to take back to CPW to fix it.?? Thanks so much

I had similar trouble, For me it was something to do with Nero.

If you've got Nero uninstall it, Preferable using Nero cleaning tool.

Reinstall and hope that cures it.

Failing that, Uninstall the DVD/CD drive from within Device Manager, Then scan for hardware changes and it should reinstall your DVD/CD drive.

Have you only tried the same Brand of CD's ?
Go to START,CONTROL PANEL,SYSTEM,HARDWARE,DEVICE MANAGER & Then click on the DVD/CD Rom Drives & tell us what it says.

If it's not the software it will be the CD's that are not compatible with your Burner. What does it say on your Actual CD burner where your Eject button is ?
Also do you know what Ram your computer is ?

Not sure how much Ram - but I know it has a fair amount from when I got it. Only trying to burn 20 songs! Roxio just did the cd, although it took about 6 mins to do!!! Just says DVD RW and compact disc RW. The cds are made by Maxell, say up to 52x. They work ok on the desktop

6 mins is not great for 20 songs, But it's not bad as well.I would take Casparwhites advice & delete then reinstall WMP.
I use Sonic RecordNow Delux, But you may want to try this software as it's FREE.

To see how much Ram you have go to START,CONTROL PANEL,SYSTEM, GENERAL TAB & look down to bottom right-hand side.
Or you could use WMP11..... http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/player/11/default.aspx

I used that one you recommended - it 6 mins and 39 sec to burn the disc. I thought these cds were good, they say up to 52x. Do you think they are rubbish?

Thanks, it has 2gb RAM

Just put back into laptop the cd I burned with WMP earlier and its skipping and spinning like mad. Had to eject it

If I was you I would try the WMP 11 I Linked you & also buy another Brand of CD's to see if that helps. When you burn the CD it gives you a Option to burn at Maximum....Did you have it set at Maximum ?

Thanks Wheresmenuts - it wont lme download wmp 11 says "There is no download available for this operating system. Please visit Windows Update to check for the latest Windows Media Player updates."

You will have to remove/Delete WMP12 from your computer before you download WMP11...To delete WMP12 go to START,CONTROL PANEL,ADD & REMOVE & then you can delete it.Now you should have no problems Installing the older version of WMP11.
