Need help please. Was working fine this morning and i left it on downloading, but now when i turn it on it goes through the acer start up screen then to a black screen with a command prompt dash that blinks. And if i press any keys it just starts beeping.

Any ideas?

Cheers

Any recovery options on the F keys before you get to the black screen?
#2
Can you get to safe mode?

Did you leave it downloading with the lid down or up? Mine gets a bit hot with the lid down, it may have overheated?

Try repeatedly pressing F8 when first starting up, and then use Safe Mode.

Sometimes having a USB device plugged in, like a memory stick or ipod, will make it do that.

no i cant. tried tapping F8 soon as it turns on. It didnt have full battery when i left it downloading though so i doubt it overheated, have left it on for longer than that previously.

all ports are free and no disc in drive

Look to see what F key it is to enter your bios (it should say on the acer load-up screen) and see if your hard drive it still working.
#9
take the battery out, just plug it in to mains, then try booting it again

unfortunately bios layouts are all different, but you want to just see if you hard drive is mentioned anywhere at all and, if it is, if you can access any further info about it. You will likely have some kind of devices section or device boot order, and it should be listed there along with your cd drive and floppy drive if you have one.

Have you got a boot disk/floppy? It might be your boot sector. If you haven't got one you can create one yourself

Was it dropped, sounds like your HD is cacked.

This happened to me btw, could get my Advent screen, then it went black, cursor would blink then when you would hit yer buttons it would beep.

Luckily for me I have insurance so mine got replaced for me.

I wasn't able to access f8, was only able to get into my start up options which I think is f2.

get a blue and gray screen: Phoenix Trustcore Setup Utility is at the top. And i can select 6 tabs: Information - Main - Advanced - Security - Boot - Exit

Hi there, this is my first post, great site by the way, saved a fortune. Your flashing underscore as i call it relates to not finding something to boot from. F2 to go into bios, go to boot options, check its set to boot from hard drive first. if not change it. If it is set to boot from hard drive first, try taking out the hard drive and reinstalling it, if this dosent work, id say offhand that the hard drive has failed. Hard to tell without looking at it. but 90% sure it aint booting the drive for either of these reasons. laptop engineer for 5 years and seen it all. hope this helps

I phoned up my insurance, they wanted me to try and boot from the disc but I didnt have a recovery disc, so they booked it in, but when it came back they replaced my HD so just figuring sounds like the same issue for you.

It keeps getting dunted(dropped).

My insurance covers me for accidental damage so I'm very lucky.

But for the first year and a half I didnt have a problem, only in say the last 6 months.

Last time they replaced my keyboard, screen, plug, hard drive, casing, looks like a brand new machine.

lol, that kills them.

If you take the hard drive out, ( few screws ) , and switch on, it will probably try to boot from network, you wont get the flashing cursor, just a repetative network message. then you will know hard drive is toast. Hook it up as an external and you may get access to info on it

yeah but if your under warranty you really dont wanna be fiddling about with it incase when you return it they can see its been tampered with so to speak.

ok thanks everyone, ill give acer a call and see what they say. I don't want to mess about with it incase it voids anything, i might start taking insurance out on things too.

We got ours when we first got the laptop, £8 per month that comes out via DD which you dont miss at all.

But it has saved our butts more than anything in the last few months.

Would highly recommend getting something like it, especially if it covers accidental damage which mine does.
