My niece has given me her laptop to have a look at after it decided to go on strike today, when its turned on it stays on the "waiting" screen as if its getting ready to start running but it wont actually boot up, i can get as far as entering the user password but nothing after that, when i try to run it in safe mode all that appears is a black screen with the safe mode writing in all 4 corners, then if i run the task manager it tell me that no processes are running and 2 services (safe mode and user login)

Any advice please!!

Its a Toshiba Equium, running Windows Vista Home,

:) She's a nightmare, carries the lappy around by the screen (and she wonders why its starting to fall off and it wont close properly now) i also caught her picking it up by the dvd drive:w00t:,

You have changed your avvy?? very serene:thumbsup: a change is as good as a rest or is someone after you;-)

its probably nothing... just shut it down and leave it for a while...

edit: i mean use start-shut down, not by abruptly disconecting the power

IF you can get into safe mode, can you jab ctrl+alt+del , and start Task Manager? Click File > New Task and type Explorer and hit enter, that might bring the desktop up. Also, from File > New Task, type MSConfig . IF that loads, click the Startup tab and untick evertthing from it, then click the services tab, hide all Microsoft services, and untick everything else. Reboot. See if that helps.

When i enter safe mode i get the black screen and a message saying "Windows explorer has stopped working", managed to enter the Task Manager and followed the info you suggested and still nothing, have just rebooted and started normally and the screen keeps saying "Please wait" and then flashing black and then going back to "Please Wait" and so on and so on?

Have managed to gain some info from her that she was downloading from Mininova yesterday:roll:

Do you have a Vista disc?

restart - hit F8 hile the comp boot up. choose "Repair this computer" and choose "Detect and Repair start-up problems" or something along that line

if that doesnt help

while youre on safe mode, do a system restore to a point of time when everything works / before the problem or even before she downloade from mininova

the msconfig method is actually similar as safe mode booting when only basic services are loaded when widnows start

Not all bad - if it's able to load MSConfig, it shoud be able to load other stuff, too. Again with the New Task thing, can you try entering just "c:" to see if that gives you a navagable file manager. You might be able to use that to enter the control panel to uninstall new junk or use restore points. Beyond that, if you can navigate to it, try loading firefox or IE, or whatever antivirus or spyware protection is on there. If there's none, try accessing the browser to download it. If you can't navigate, putting

c:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\iexplore.exe

into the new task box should bring up IE.

in that case, you should use the recovery console (you dont need the vista DVD for this, newer computer has their recovery console permanently isntalled in the harddisk).

Use the F8 method - choose "repair your computer" instead of "start in safe mode"
and then choose "detect and repair start-up problem"
if that is not helpful also, Im afraid you have to choose "restore to factory setting" from the repair menu

Just finished the "Detect and repair" and still the same, dont seem to have the "factory setting" option, i have, Startup repair (tried and nothing), System Restore (nothing again) Windows Complete Restore (tried and says i dont have a backup), Windows Memory Diagnostic Tool (havent tried but dont think its relevant, Command Prompt (no), Restoring the complete windows operating system (only want me to insert the original disc),

So i cant find a factory default option, i know what you mean as my old Acer had the same option and came in useful a few times,

lol, nice one.

Do you like the Office? I hear that is on back to back on Sunday.

My brother gave me the Extras dvd for Xmas,(obvo last minute panic buying, lol) it's not to my taste, I tried watching it for the first time last week, I didn't like it. I may watch the 2nd series cos Robert De Niro is in it but otherwise, it's going to Ebay, lol.

Hey I may be going to Edingburgh Zoo this Sunday, how exciting is that?

LOL, I may put some pics up on here, just to entertain you all:p

As i think im turning into a Vampire i have been watching the American version of "The Office" for the past few weeks (They have a double @ 01.45am ish Tuesdays on ITV2) and i love Steve Carrell, didnt find extras that good, nowhere near as good,

Last time i went to Edinburgh i took and ex as a suprise Xmass pressie, went ice skating at the Winter Wonderland:), the time before that it was a Stag and i cant remember that much:roll:

Post the pics ss!! its nice to see how much of a good time you had and also to remind people of when they went themselves:thumbsup:
